4.30.10: Today's Show
Hello Listeners! I am back and ready to Rock! Thank you for supporting guest hosts Maya Sanchez and Sito Negron while they were on the air. And thank you Maya and Sito for filling in.
Today we'll discuss what's to do this weekend, plus we'll hear from the people at Mercado Mayapan who are celebrating an anniversary this weekend.
We'll also interview Ahamed Kutty, M.D. about his book "Adam's Gene and the Mitochondrial Eve." This book takes a very interesting look at the descent of man from Adam and Eve based on the epics of Hinduism, the Bible and the Qur'an.
To say the least, this is going to be an interesting Friday on The Lisa D Show!

Solar IS Sexy!
Solar energy: Program would allow greater use of sun
El Paso Times Editorial Board
Posted: 04/26/2010 12:00:00 AM MDT
Now here's an interesting idea. El Paso, which has been a notable also-ran when it comes to harnessing solar power, is moving to create a Property Assessed Clean Energy program.
This means that property owners -- residential and business -- would be able to borrow money for the installation of solar panels and other energy-smart equipment, and pay back the loans through theirproperty-tax bills.
The program would be voluntary, with those participating able to pay back the loans over a 20-year period with an additional charge tacked onto their property tax. It wouldn't be an interest-free loan, though the precise interest rate is yet to be determined.
Other locales across the country with similar programs charge 2 to 6 percent.
This program is in its infancy, but could start as soon as January, according to Marty Howell, overseer of the city's conservation efforts.
For being as sunny as it is during most of the year, El Paso makes little use of that abundant and "free" natural resource. We should be leading the nation when it comes to research into and use of solar energy. You'd think most every roof in the city would be capped with solar panels, but ...
The PACE program seems a good way to dip the city's toe into the solar sea. It's not going to be for everyone. Many people won't even be able to afford a low-interest loan.
But PACE would be a good way to gauge interest in solar energy and show its possibilities.

The Border Wall 2010
I created this video while driving along the Border Highway. So many people talk about the "wall" but it is something totally different to drive along it.
4.26.10: Today's Show
Today on "The Lisa D Show" we'll start with "news that matters to you" analysis from our Monday guest Chris Babcock. Babcock will focus on the immigration legislation passed in Arizona last week dealing with illegal immigration. Does this new legislation condone racial profiling? We'll talk about that and so much more.
Also, we'll talk with Gemtria St. Clair about the programming and upcoming events at Kids Excel. Below is a video of a recent Kids Excel demonstration in Downtown El Paso at Kidzpalooza 2010. Gemtria is promoting the May fundraiser that helps fund Kids Excel programming in El Paso schools.
Gemtria grew up in El Paso, Texas and graduated from Loretto Academy. She began studying ballet at the age of three. She danced with the University Civic Ballet Company under the direction of Ingeborg Heuser. Gemtria attended UTEP and later, The University of Utah on full ballet scholarships. She raised four children before resurrecting her dance background and becoming an instructor for the National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI-NM) in 1998. She spent several years as the North Artistic Director for NDI-NM, co-choreographing the End-of-the-Year Event, directing the North Show, overseeing staff, and training apprentices. In 2002, the NDI-NM Board of Directors appointed Gemtria the Managing Director for the organization. Working in close partnership with Catherine Oppenheimer, the Co-Founder/Artistic Director of NDI-NM, she facilitated a $7,000,000 Capital Campaign, oversaw the construction and management of the Dance Barns—a 33,000 square foot facility, managed the organization”s growing administrative staff, and planned for the dynamic growth of NDI-NM. In 2004, NDI-NM was approached by the Founding Chair of Kids Excel El Paso to seed a program in the El Paso community. Gemtria acted as an artistic and administrative consultant and was a founding member of the KEEP Board of Directors. Her interest in the success of the organization inspired her to move to El Paso to fill the position of Artistic/Executive Director for the budding program in 2005.

4.23.10: Today's Show
Today on The Lisa D Show we'll talk about the Global Star Party and Downtown Niche.
First we'll talk with Jon Holtzman Interim Department Head at the Department of Astronomy, New Mexico State University about a very cool event, the Global Star Party! "The excitement generated by Global Astronomy Month will come to a peak on Saturday, April 24th, with the ultimate observing event: the Global Star Party. Of course, it’s B.Y.O.T.—Bring Your Own Telescope—but encourage even those who don’t have one to come anyway. All are invited, all will be excited. It is amazing that when we turn our gaze upward, all religious, national, geographical, cultural and political barriers fade into the darkness. April 24th is the time to come out under the stars, bridge gaps across the seas, and join your brother and sister astronomers in proving that the world is, in fact, “one people, one sky.”
Then we'll talk to David Martinez, editor and publisher of Downtown Niche, a lovely little (physically) publication that focuses on arts & culture in Downtown El Paso. Find out where you can get a copy or click here to visit the publication online.

Artsy Fartsy Kids
Want your children to be more interesting? Send them to art classes at oLo Gallery.
Creative Kids oLo Gallery art classes - New dates added!
Little Picassos, Creative Kids has designed an early-access-to-art curriculum for children 3-6 years old. This specialized class is taught by a certified child-life specialist, giving children the opportunity to discover and express themselves through different activities that include art, rhythm, movement and even preparing their own snack. During this developmental period, children are very inquisitive and playful, and love to learn through exploring, creating, pretending and discovering. Through carefully planned age-appropriate activities, they are given the opportunity to fulfill these needs in a fun way that works with an arts education foundation and their own artwork. Classes are held from 10 a.m.-noon on each class date. The course fee includes all materials and a snack.
Project SAC (Saturday Art Classes), Project SAC is open for youth ages 7-18. The studio art classes provide culturally sensitive art-mediated opportunities for positive development and expression for youth with a predisposition for the arts. Classes take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on each class date. Creative Kids provides the resources and independent communication avenues that guide the children through the discovery of their own talent, interest and passion for the creative arts that is mediated through trained artists. The participating children are engaged in a “hands-on” arts and digital media curriculum that includes painting on canvas, printmaking, silk-screening, ceramics, watermedia, sculpture and graphic design. An important aspect of this program is giving the youth the opportunity to showcase and exhibit their artwork in public spaces throughout the El Paso community. The course fee includes all materials.
Both classes are held at the Creative Kids oLo Gallery, located at 504 San Francisco St. in the Union Plaza district of downtown El Paso. Call for prices at 568-7506.

Alan went to a show at the Black Market on December 28th, 2008, but it got cancelled. Seeing the 3 touring bands (Local Natives, Voxhaul Broadcast and The Union Line) stranded with no where to go, Alan helped them get their show back, beginning his involvement with music in El Paso. on January 3rd, Alan met with JJ and Stephen and saw that they all shared the same ideas, and began planning ERA."

4.15.10: Today's Guests
Today on "The Lisa D Show" we'll be joined in the studio by Mark Alvarado of the Border Roots. Alvarado will play some tunes and talk about upcoming performances fo both his band and general music scene stuff. We love Mark as a guest as his voice is wonderful to listen to and his perspective is insightful and interesting.
Also, we will hear from Rebecca Krasne about a very unique event at James Magee's Hill this Saturday. "In a rare site-specific event, renowned saxophone improvisers John Butcher and Joe McPhee will perform solos in the vast West Texas desert at “The Hill” of James Magee, Saturday, April 17, 3 p.m. "The Hill" in Cornudas is a monumental (yet very personal) work of art, isolated on remote private land 70 miles east of El Paso. Thirty years in the making (and still in progress), “The Hill” is the life work of James Magee. Complex and monumental, The Hill consists of 4 buildings (40 feet long, 20 feet wide and 17 feet in height), three of which house installations by Magee. Crafted of irregularly-cut local shale rock, each building is entered through a majestic iron portal, 8 feet wide and the full height of the building. The Hill sits in a gently rolling landscape with mesmerizing views of snow-capped mountains and limitless West Texas skies.Admission is $75. Reservations are required. For information, questions and reservations: www.namelesssound.org, info@namelesssound.org, 713-928-5653. For information about The Hill and The Cornudas Mountain Foundation: www.mageehill.org. Patrick Kell on "The Lisa D Show"
In cased you missed it, Patrick Kell performed on "The Lisa D Show." He was in studio promoting his CD release party and sang a couple of tunes.
From his website: Patrick Kell is from El Paso, TX. A land rich in old west history. The unique style and attitude that is of the land is also conveyed through Patrick Kells sound and persona. Deep, smooth vocals with a slight Texas edge carry you along through the stories Patrick Kell has created. The sharp twang of his guitar, the lonesome whistle of his harmonica, and the steady percussion rolls down the line like a freight train headed straight for your heart. Visit www.patrickkellmusic.com

4.12.10: Today's Guests
This Monday on The Lisa D Show we'll feature live in-studio interviews with Gabriel Rivera and Jim Ward. Both guests will be promoting the upcoming fundraiser for Red Mesa, this Thursday at the Garden.
Everyone's Invited: Local film "Red Mesa" - which was shown at the 2009 Plaza Classic Film Festival - went on to win Best Short Film at the 2009 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF). It's good news, but the GREAT news is that the win at LALIFF qualifies it to be submitted for the 2011 Academy Awards and possibly win an Oscar®!
To do that, the filmmakers need to pay for a film print, get many more festivals under their belt, and make a whole lot of DVDs "for your consideration". The El Paso Community Foundation is acting as their fiscal sponsor for this Oscar® campaign, meaning your donation is tax deductible to the extent of the law.
HELP GET "RED MESA" TO THE 2011 OSCARS®!
This fundraising event will feature the only solo performance of the year by Jim Ward (Sleepercar, Sparta, At the Drive-In), plus a screening of the film and appearances by co-star Gabriel Rivera and writer-director Ilana Lapid. Admission to the event is a suggested donation of $10.
TO GIVE NOW, PLEASE VISIT WWW.EPCF.ORG/DONATE & TYPE "RED MESA" IN THE BOX READING "Does this contribution go to a particular fund or project?". MINIMUM DONATION IS $10.

4.5.10: Today's Guests
Today on "The Lisa D Show" we'll start the show with Monday guest Chris Babcock talking about news that matters. Our main focus is one news story in particular that broke over the weekend, "Rep. Norma Chávez baits Naomi Gonzalez about sexual orientation." Seeing as Early Voting starts today, this story is a great conversation piece as it's timely and deals with the culture of politics and dirty campaigns.
Later in the show, se'll talk to El Paso Representative Susie Byrd about her personal experience with dirty campaigns and how she feels about Chavez "outing" Gonzalez.
Byrd posted a link to the article mentioned above on her Facebook page and a tremendous conversation started and is still going strong. Is it ethical to make a candidate's sexualty part of politics? Tune in today to look into this issue and more.

Today on the Lisa D Show we’ll talk about blogging at Fort Bliss, gay animals and Queer Cinema.
First we’ll talk to Samantha Reho, Public Affairs Specialist at Fort Bliss, about a very cool event, Bloggers Roundtable on April 6. From Reho “Fort Bliss and the El Paso community have a tremendous relationship and we're looking for other ways to share our messages across all mediums. During this roundtable, you will have the opportunity to meet other influential El Paso bloggers, discuss opportunities and advancements at Fort Bliss with the post's Public Affairs Office staff and exchange ideas of how we can work together to share the most accurate and up-to-date post and local community information. Our goal is to further enhance and strengthen our ties with you and other respectable bloggers and further highlight the magnetic bond between our community and the post.
Both myself and Jaime Abeytia will participate in this event and look forward to reaching out to the Fort Bliss community in this viral kinda way! For more information on how you can attend the event, call 915-568-3731.
Next we’ll talk to David Villanueva, marketing and publicity, Frontera Pride Film Festival about the “Film By You” Movie Contest and the Month of Queer Cinema.
Film by You” Movie Contest Info
“Film by You” movie scene reenactment contest on YouTube. “We wanted to create a contest to get El Paso and its surrounding communities excited about the festival and film in general! So what better way to do that than to have people reenact their favorite movie scenes for all to see. And so we came up with the “Film By You” Video Contest.” The 2nd Annual Frontera Pride Film Festival will be June 18 and 19, 2010 and the winners of this short and sweet contest will be announced all during the festival. Winners will receive various items donated by local business who support the festival. For more information on the contest and to see the complete set of rules please log onto their website www.fronterapridefilmfestival.com or log on to the contest page at www.youtube.com/group/FilmByYou.
