Neon Desert Music Festival Band Lineup

Neon Desert Music Festival annual music festival organized by Splendid Sun Productions held in Downtown El Paso, TEXAS. This event features local, regional, national, and international entertainers mostly in Indie rock, Latin Rock, and Electronic music as well as local Arts. The event has several stages, each playing live music continuously. The festival will take place Saturday April 30, 2011, at San Jacinto Plaza.

First 1,000 tickets are $25 each, cost goes up to $35 after that.

Party: Tembloroso Creative Lab Launch

El Pasoans Take Charge of Music and Arts with Launch of Tembloroso Creative Lab

Proud El Paso creatives Jim Ward, Kristine Ward, Armando Alvarez and Brandon Silverstein have joined forces to create an online home base for El Paso visual artists and musicians with the February 14th launch of tembloroso.com. The new site will feature an online store, artist profiles, daily blog updates, a calendar of events, and more. Tembloroso Creative Lab will provide a worldwide voice for El Paso's talent.

“With the talent and networks that our local artists have developed we felt like it was a good time to use our abilities to create a place where they can both sell their goods and increase their profiles,” said Jim Ward.

The Odyssey Program, an eight month-long entrepreneurship program designed to teach women how to develop their own high-growth, scalable companies, is being recognized by the El Paso business community as a sign of awesome progress for the future of El Paso. The Odyssey Program will follow a rigorous and proven methodology in a supportive environment with 25 other aspiring women entrepreneurs. The program features speakers from the local business community as well as a network of program graduates. The Odyssey Program will provide the women entrepreneurs with three entrepreneurs-in-residence (EIRs). Throughout the program, these three women will serve as one-on-one mentors to help participants’ access capital, license technology, assemble an advisory board, and much more.

Homeless in El Paso: Mark

As told to me by Mark, parking lot on Mesa and University, Jan. 27, 2011:

Mark arrived in El Paso from Albuquerque recently, and he's one of the most visible homeless men in the city given his outfit. Mark wears a Santa Claus costume and Scooby Doo hat so that he can spread good cheer to all those who see him walking the streets. The outfit landed him on the front page of the Albuquerque Journal in December 2009. (I have yet to fact check that.)

These days Mark is busy raising $50 so he can buy an Easter Bunny costume and head back to Albuquerque by Easter Sunday in the hopes of landing back on the front page of the Journal. He is very excited to tell you his story and I promised him I would help him raise the $50 for his bunny suit.

If you see Mark on the street, please make a donation for his Easter Bunny suit and let him know you heard about him from Lisa.

The are looking for odd/eccentric collectors--it can be a museum, a place or just a regular person who collects stuff. As an example of the kind of thing they're looking for, they' ve done episodes on a person that had the largest Beatles Collection in the world, a spur collection, cowboy hats, restaurants that collected light fixtures, etc...

El Paso Museum of History Presents Grand Opening and Family Day for the Exhibit The Threads of Memory: Spain and the United States (El Hilo de la Memoria: España y los Estados Unidos)

Experience the excitement as the El Paso Museum of History celebrates the grand opening of this once in a lifetime exhibit, The Threads of Memory: Spain and the United States (El Hilo de la Memoria: España y los Estados Unidos) at this free Family event. Activities will include period sword fighting demonstrations by the Society for Creative Anachronism, calligraphy or writing with a quill pen, doing straw art, making an old globe miniature to take home plus more. Children and adults can try on reproduction period clothing and armor such as the early settlers would have worn plus handle reproduction 17th century weapons such as muskets and swords. There will be re-enactors wearing costumes of the period and a possible special appearance by early explorer Cortes.

At 3:00 PM there will be a special bilingual performance by Teatro Paraguas of “The Peralta Proclamation.” This is not a play but a dramatic costumed reading of one of the documents that will be on display in the exhibit where Pedro de Peralta receives his orders to take over Juan de Oñate’s failed efforts to colonize New Mexico. This company performed for the Prince and Princess of Spain during the 300th Anniversary celebration of the founding of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

On this day only, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a special tour of the exhibit by Falia González, Chief of the Conservation Department of the Archivo General de Indias and visiting curator.

All activities will be free and open to all.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Fundación Rafael del Pino and is co-organized by the Archivo General de Indias (General Archive of the Indies) and the State Corporation for the Spanish Cultural Action Abroad (Sociedad Estatal para la Acción Cultural Exterior, or SEACEX), in collaboration with Spain’s Ministries for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and Culture.

El Paso, Texas -- The El Paso Marathon Foundation is all about helping you become a better YOU in 2011--We’d love to be your new year’s resolution! To get you started on your path, we’ll be hosting an insightful clinic disguised as a party (shhh…) designed for potential 5k and half marathoners. Visit with us on Thursday, January 13th at Geske’s Fire Grill, 1506 Lee Trevino, from 5:30p to 7:30p and gain valuable information from nutrition and training experts designed to get even the most stubborn non-runners out and about. Being a “marathoner” has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?



Whether you’re a curious “non-runner”, assembling a team or plan on meeting a personal goal by participating in the marathon, the New Year’s Resolution party is a great way to get inspired and get training. Meet like-minded individuals, get training tips, and have a great time. The El Paso Marathon will take place on Sunday, March 6, 2011.

Volunteer: Gene Roddenberry Planetarium Docent Program needs your help

Greetings from the Gene Roddenberry Planetarium!

As you may know, we have recently started a docent program to help our student planetarium visitors get more out of their visit to our facility.

Unfortunately we have not been as successful as we had hoped in attracting volunteers to be docents. So, we are turning to our EPISD family in hope that maybe you know someone that might be interested in becoming a docent at the planetarium.

The workload is easy, the time commitment is small, and the satisfaction is great.
Docents guide students through the exhibits as well as help planetarium personnel with crowd control. Docents do not have to be "scientists." They just have to love helping our students learn and helping the community grow.

The Gene Roddenberry Planetarium host shows throughout the school year, and has shown more than 1 million students in the El Paso area the wonders of the universe in its 41 years of operation. Prospective docents do not have to have a background in astronomy or science in order to be part of the program.

Planetarium docents will help students understand the exhibits of the planetarium as well as help with questions regarding planetarium programs. Docents will assist in the planetarium during the days that classes are visiting. Typically, there are three shows a day during the school year. Docents may volunteer for all day sessions, or partial days. The schedule is very flexible. Volunteers will be part of the EPISD Volunteer in Public Schools program, and will have to go through proper screening prior to becoming part of the program.

This is a tremendous opportunity for organizations that have to meet community service hours or even retirees with a little time to spare. We are hoping that you can help spread the word, and that you may know of a person or group that could help with our program.

Three Kings Day Celebration – A Day in Puerto Rico

Sample Puerto Rican Cuisine, Music, Dance and Art on January 6th and 8th at the El Paso Public Library

The El Paso Public Library in cooperation with Architectural Solutions, Tommy Santos, Luna’s and Sons Grocery, Organización Cívico-Cultural de Puertorriqueños en El Paso, Puerto Rican Medical Society at El Paso, and others is hosting a Puerto Rican themed 3 Kings Day Celebration featuring the food, music, dance and art of Puerto Rico. The celebration will take place on January 6 and 8 with events scheduled throughout both days. The event is free and open to the public. Three Kings Day, also known as The Epiphany or El Día de los Reyes Magos in Spanish, is celebrated on January 6th and is a Christian holiday believed to be the day that Jesus Christ is revealed to be the son of God in man. The biblical story says that after Jesus was born, it took the Three Kings, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar 12 days to travel to Bethlehem, the place of his birth. There, the Kings gave Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In Puerto Rico, Three Kings Day is one of the most important holidays of the year and is marked by celebrations featuring traditions such as parrandas which are groups of singers that make the rounds surprising friends with a serenade of aguinaldos or songs. On the eve of January 6, children that have been good are traditionally given gifts said to be from the Three Kings, reminiscent of the biblical story. Children are taught to gather hay, straw or grass and place it underneath their beds for the Three King’s horses as they journey from town to town. The holiday also boasts its own traditional fare some of which will be available to sample during the celebration to be held at the Library.
