In the News: Joseph Becherer Reviews Dave Ford's Truck Drawing

Below is a paragraph from a longer piece by Joseph Becherer in the Grand Rapids Press on works from the UICA in ArtPrize. Reading through the piece gives you a good idea of the tone UICA set for this year’s ArtPrize in the level of work on display at both its facilities.

“Neighboring is a drawing/performance piece, “Truck Drawing: El Paso Texas to Grand Rapids, Michigan” by Texas-based artist Dave Ford. The work is composed of rows of handsome, yet ghostly abstract drawings in which dark centers swirl out into the oceans of white paper. From a distance, the resemblance to minor gun powder explosions could be inferred. However, as neighboring didactics explain, the work was realized by rows of water bottles with graphite tips suspended upside down like pendulums in a moving truck. The dynamics of water, weight and movement allow for the drawn images owing to human conception, but absent the human hand. This strange duality in mark making and object creation gets to the very heart of the conceptual art. But outside of planning is the artist’s openness to the laws of chance. The bonus is that the work is most handsome and serene.”

Joseph Becherer is chief curator and vice president for collections and exhibitions at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park and a professor of art history at Aquinas College. He also was on the curatorial team for the ArtPrize exhibition center at Meijer Gardens and as well as Calder Plaza and the Gillette Bridge. This continues a series of columns that offer his views on various art topics throughout ArtPrize 2010.

About Dave Ford

An avid collector of handwritten grocery lists, Dave Ford graduated from Grand Valley State University with a BFA in 1993. Afterward, in typical American folklore fashion, Mr. Ford moved to the art dormitory of the eastern U.S., also known as Williamsburg, Brooklyn. There he continued making art, participated in group shows and began creating his “Truck Drawings.” The drawings, which document the truck’s movement with dozens of pencils, proved to be fruitful and were featured in the sixth edition of Dave Eggers', McSweeneys in 2000. This attention generated several commissioned drawings and with the artist’s subsequent move to El Paso, Texas, long distant drawings to Connecticut and San Francisco became logistically possible. The opportunity to do a live drawing from the El Paso-Juarez Border to Grand Rapids for the Artprize event has re-invigorated the truck idea. Dave Ford is currently creating works addressing the Border wall and utilizing the weight of an egg to suspend itself. For more information visit www.fordart.com.

9.21.10: Today's Show

Today on "The Lisa D Show" at noon MST on KHRO 1150 AM we'll interview Victor Guerrero from MCAD about some exciting new events taking place in the arts & culture scene this October.

Then we'll talk briefly about Lady Gaga's recent campaigns in Maine for the repeal DADT. Gaga is awfully young to pick a cause but considering so many of you think she's dumb, she could be just another coked-up celeb like Paris.

Lastly, we'll talk to John Olivas from www.HowPaso.com, a new and exciting website dedicated to fostering online discussions on/about El Paso. John and his brother created the site and have seen tremendous growth since the launch. We'll talk to John today, live in the studio.

About HOWpaso.com

We are a 100% free question and answer site just for El Paso residents. You can get fast answers about real estate, school districts, Franklin Mountains -- anything El Paso related -- straight from the people who know best - El Paso residents!
Isn't this kind of like a forum?

Sort of. Much like a forum, questions get asked and El Paso residents from around the city are able to chime in with answers. But if you visit normal forums much, you've probably discovered (like we have) that they often take twists and turns, get off topic, and sometimes you have to sift through pages of nonsense to get to the good stuff.

Not so with HOWpaso.com! Everything around here is vote-able, just like an election (but without all the political stuff). And basically when things are put up to a vote, the best answers typically bubble to the top, while the not-so-best answers sink to the bottom.

Artprize Truck Drawing 2010

Dave Ford hit the road for Grand Rapids, MI, today where he'll compete in Artprize 2010. Voting begins Sept. 22, photos and updates coming!

Click here to see photos from the Bon Voyage send off party!

Truck Drawing Info:

Truck Drawing: El Paso TX to Grand Rapids MI

Art form: 2-D, Performance

Medium: graphite on paper

Year created: Work not created yet

Description of work: The Truck Drawings document found energy over hundreds of miles in the back of a truck. Interested not only in communicating with common activity, driving trucks all day as an art handler, supplied me with an environment to cure marks on paper in my daily world. Not punch-the-clock waiting to make art later in the studio, but be creative, live on the spot. A return empty-truck trip to New York from Dallas, provided the first ‘canvas.’ Over paper taped to the truck’s bed were 120 suspended water bottle pendulums, each with their own graphite tip. These would individually make their unique marks dependant on the weight of water level, grade of graphite and length of leash. Aesthetic concerns are addressed initially in the compositional arrangement of light and dark pencils, then adjustments on the road. At the Truck Drawings core, however, is “letting go”, allowing other forces to contribute. The results are map like, echoing their conception. Viva, El Paso to Grand Rapids!

Most recently Crowder wrote about the now coined corruption case "Poisoned Pawns" in the El Paso Inc. where he is a staff reporter. From the article, "for the first time in the six-year probe of public corruption, federal investigators linked two politically active and controversial lawyers to the now-defunct Access HealthSource, a network that once served 65,000 public employees and their families." About the El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center

The El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center was established to educate the public—particularly the youth of today—about the Nazi Holocaust, as a way of ensuring that similar acts of terrorism will not be repeated; to memorialize and pay tribute to those who perished in the Holocaust and to honor those who survived; to fight prejudice and bigotry; and to remind the world, through education, of the value and dignity of human life. 9.1.10: Today's Show

Happy September to you all! May your Fall rock like "The Lisa D Show".

Today on "The Lisa D Show" at noon MST on KHRO 1150 AM we'll first discuss how many homosexuals/gays live in the United States and El Paso. Why? A. Because I'm curious, B. I think tons of people live in the closet and C. I think it's like 80% and Wikipedia says it's 10%.

Then we'll feature Anna Aleman the executive director of FEMAP, a private, nonprofit organization in El Paso that helps people through a variety of programs including a hospital, 41 family-planning clinics and a nursing school. FEMAP is in the news this week as the founder and philanthropist Guadalupe De la Vega will be featured as a CNN Hero of the Week. Aleman will be in the studio to discuss that exciting news and the annual FEMAP fundraiser scheduled for Sept. 24 at Grace Gardens.

Tune into the show at KHRO 1150 AM or stream the show at www.talkradio1150.com. Also, feel free to call the show at 915.880.4376 or send an email to thelisadshow@gmail.com.
