Art in the time of Corona: Chris Froeter Paints Portraits of Small Business Owners in Evanston

Evanston Made member artist Chris Froeter has found a creative way to support small businesses in Evanston during the stay-at-home order.

He’s taking requests for commissions on Instagram @chrisfroeter_art to paint a shop owner's portrait, for $200 each. He’s asking people to send selfies instead of taking their photos himself.

When the portrait is done, he gifts the portrait to the shop owner along with $200 cash! Can you imagine anything nicer? A free portrait and cash. John Kim of Backlot Coffee is one such store owner who has benefited from this project!

The "Art in the Time of Corona" interview series features interviews Evanston Made members about the projects that have come to life during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Listen to my conversation with letterpress artist Ben Blount who created a new line of posters with inspirational and directive messages like; Keep Your Distance. 

Ben is placing these posters in the window of his studio at 1123 Florence Avenue. He was inspired by Amanda Evanston's "Thank you helpers" banner on her front porch at Florence and Dempster and the virtual gallery and "Everything will be okay" signs at 1100 Florence Gallery at Florence Avenue and Greenleaf. 

With a new studio schedule during the Covid-19 outbreak, Ben is seeing new pedestrians in his window everyday (go wave at him 7-9a) and is mulling over crowd-sourcing messages for his next batch of posters. We're grateful for creatives like Ben who live and work in Evanston, they help raise the bar for all of us to be better neighbors and busier artists!

Cécile Trentini's Daily Walking Exhibit

Artist Cécile Trentini hated to exercise until she added a simple twist, art making. This is how it went, walk for 15 minutes at a high speed then stop and take a photo, turn around, walk back. She then printed the photo on fabric, collected 100 of such photos and created a quilt. Over the quilted pieces, she sewed painterly elements with thread. The end result is a healthier Trentini and a elegant collection of painterly quilts.

This conversation covers the life of this project to date and where it plans to go.

See Trentini's work on display at One River School in Downtown Evanston, 1033 Davis Street. Opening party this Saturday, March 7, 5-7p. Work is on display thru March 20.

Kathy Halper Exhibit, What A Day It's Been

April 6, 5-8p, Kathy Halper’s solo exhibit "What a Day it's Been" oepns at 1100 Florence in Evanston. Halper will be showing work created over the past two years, as well as some embroidered pieces.

A series of six paintings explore the angst and absurdity of our political climate. Embracing Russia's recent influence in our lives, Halper used the culture's beautiful folk art for my inspiration in creating these narratives.

Other new works use discarded Amazon boxes as my primary material. Painting, gluing, printmaking and carving work together to create unique stories of my life.

The show runs thru April 22. There is an artist talk scheduled for Sunday, April 14 from 3-5 pm. Visit 1100florence.com

What a Day It’s Been

Russia, If You're Listening

After the 2016 election I was frozen. For a year I could not find a direction to make art. When I finally gave myself permission to use my feelings of insanity and anxiety in my artmaking, these paintings poured out. Using Russian folk art as a visual guidepost and an inside joke, I set about capturing my angst. My goal is not to tell the viewer a story they already know, but to exorcise my personal discomfort, and hope that others may recognize their own feelings.

Amazon Tales

Discarded Amazon boxes are the starting point to tell personal narratives that are both ephemeral and tactile, ridiculous and poignant. Is it possible to make art from stories that are not born out of tragedy or remarkable fortune? As I seek out memories of a relatively uneventful life, I explore these questions with rule-free approach to materials and technique, a sense a absurdity and a growing stack of cardboard, looking for the magic in the everyday.

In this series, I express my thoughts on aging by sitting with each image for months on end pondering my dreams and losses with each stitch. I watch them disappear from the top and fall to the ground. I watch them melt out of my life. John Kim is Building a Community within a Community at Backlot Coffee in Evanston

Backlot Coffee founder John Kim is more than a coffee shop owner, he's a community builder, making room for organic engagements in beautiful environments. Our conversation takes place at Backlot Coffee on Central Street, in Evanston, where the walls are activated with art*, every seat is taken and the interior space is friendly, bright and modern. 

John worked with Isaac Bloom, the other Founder, to create a coffee shop based around community, like the infamous shared secret playground in North Evanston called The Backlot.

Today's conversation focuses on why John is making the visual arts such an important part of the experience for customers. We talk extensively about Jay Ryan's mural, photo below, which celebrates the whimsical nature of Jay's work and the joy of finding community in your community.

Verzell James, founder of Awe-Sauce hot sauces

Meet Verzell James, Evanston resident and founder of AWE-SAUCE hot sauces. Verzell has created eight unique hot sauces from his own peppers and has we has been working on creating these for almost twenty years. 2017 is the first year that Verzell bottled them, working out of the Family Focus Evanston commercial kitchen and began selling his hot sauces. They are available individually or in a set of eight via the Facebook page and area events such as the I Love Evanston Pop Up Sale on Feb 9, 10 at 1100 Florence Ave in West Evanston.

Journey Shannon of Noir d'Ebene Chocolat et Patisserie

 Journey Shannon is the Chocolate Artist behind Noir d'Ebene Chocolat et Patisserie, an online boutique of mouth-melting deliciousness. She works out of the commercial kitchen in the basement of the Family Focus building in Evanston, where her creations range from turtles to chocolate dipped coconut macaroons, all made from scratch.

Born and raised in Evanston, Journey attend after school programs at Family Focus in her youth, and returns to the building in adulthood as a chef and program counselor. Journey is in the building everyday, spending 10-12 hours in the kitchen transforming cacao nibs, flour, eggs, vanilla beans and sugar into delicious chocolates - doing exactly what makes her very happy. Journey shines in the kitchen, singing and smiling; the taste of her chocolates and pastries is evidence she is doing what she loves.

In this interview we talk about Journey’s 7 years in the business, her creative expression through this culinary art and where she plans to grow.

Lisa Solar, Visual Artist Celebrates Solo Show at The Saw Room Gallery

Visual artist Lisa Solar celebrates an upcoming solo show at the Saw Room in The Alley Gallery, July 15 - Aug. 16, opening receptions Saturday, July 22, 5-8 p.m., and August 5, 5-8 p.m.

In this interview we talk about the body of work on display in her show "The Game" which includes an installation of works in progress that involve Solar's color practice. The Saw Room Gallery offers an intimate space to view numerous new works by Solar, curated by Darren Oberto and Ross Martens of The Alley Gallery. 

From the Saw Room website: This current body of work by Lisa Solar reflects her interest in the game of Formal Painting.  Each piece represents a challenge to pinpoint the precise moment in which the relationship between dissonance and harmony becomes unstable, using the least number of moves.  The works can be considered a record of sequences, and rely on a formulaic set of opening moves.  As in chess, a few reliable restrictions or combinations have the potential to propagate into infinite diverging results. In the current body of work I am exploring color relationships via forms that hover between biomorphic and geometric. Within the stricture of a handful of of typical moves (gradient color, pulsing polygons and hallucinogenic face arrangements) I feel for the line between dissonance and harmony and push and pull colors back and forth over it.

My method of working is handed down from the Bauhaus school of color theory and leans heavily on making empirical choices and continually reacting to them. Through the duration of each work, I explore the link between emotive and logical response, and then advance or retreat accordingly.

Formal influences are many and always in flux. Jessica Stockholder’s work remains a constant bellwether as does Sonia Delaunay and of course, Albers (both Anni and Josef).

Bob worked for The City News Bureau of Chicago, where some of the country’s best reporters got their start. (covered mostly homicides there). After City News, Bob worked for The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, covering Chicago’s legal community.

Currently Bob freelances for the Chicago Tribune, Thomson Reuters, The New York Times., The Daily Herald and DNAInfo and Vice. In addition, he runs an online publication called The Chicago Ambassador, which features local stories and interviews.
