LP Lundy Photographs Lake Michigan's Many Moods

LP Lundy wears many hats and in this podcast we focus on his work as a photographer. Lundy has been taking photos of Lake Michigan from the same location for a few years, at the waterfront facing East from the Northwestern Campus, capturing the moods, beauty and awesomeness of our lake neighbor.

This February Lundy’s Lake Michigan horizon portraits are on display at Backlot Coffee, 2006 Central Street. In this interview we talk about photography as a method to build relationships with your community and natural world.

Lake Michigan is blocks from Lundy’s house, a quick bike ride and an entity he is addicted (in a good way) to photographing it at the same day, every day...a source of inspiration.

LP Lundy Bio                                 

LP (Larry) Lundy has been a production designer for 35 years. Born in Queens, New York, he graduated from the State University College at Buffalo with a BFA in painting and sculpture. Lundy was a founding member of Hallwalls Art Center, along with Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo and other artists in Buffalo in 1975, where he curated DADADAY (1976) and DADADAY 100 (2016), and the Buffalo Film Festival. Lundy produced a multi-media installation Urban Animal at ArtPark (1978). He developed Writeratio, to give writers an opportunity to read from their works. His art has been shown at The New Museum (NYC), A Space (Toronto), Art Institute of Chicago, Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo), and 33 Contemporary in Chicago among other venues.

Was a member of Randolph Street Gallery and curated the Loop Show (1981) at the historic Fisher Building in Chicago. Designed murals for the Mother’s of Perry Children’s Center in Buffalo through the CETA Program (1978). His art writing has appeared in The New Art Examiner, the Chicago Reader, the Journal of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Lundy's set design work has been seen in film and TV productions such as High Fidelity, ER, The Babe, Flatliners, Chicago Hope, R Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet, Grand Piano, Shameless, Sense8 and Jupiter Ascending. He has twice won the Best of the Midwest Film Festival Best Art Direction Award, in 2002 and 2005.

He has taught production design at Columbia College from 2007 through 2012 and at Northwestern in 2011. He will be teaching at DePaul University beginning in March of 2018.

Joerg Metzner's Photography Begs Us to Let Go of Knowing

Photographer Joerg Metzner believes things happen when you let go of knowing and just let things come to you. This is expressed in his upcoming photography exhibit “Tomorrow Never Knows”, March 2-5, at 1100 Florence gallery in Evanston.

In this podcast we talk about the surreal and meditative nature of his photography that “breathes light” into Joerg’s life. With incredible craftsmanship and deep intention, Joerg uses photography to chronicle his community in a way that asks people to stop and pause and look deeply at the world around them.

Verzell James, founder of Awe-Sauce hot sauces

Meet Verzell James, Evanston resident and founder of AWE-SAUCE hot sauces. Verzell has created eight unique hot sauces from his own peppers and has we has been working on creating these for almost twenty years. 2017 is the first year that Verzell bottled them, working out of the Family Focus Evanston commercial kitchen and began selling his hot sauces. They are available individually or in a set of eight via the Facebook page and area events such as the I Love Evanston Pop Up Sale on Feb 9, 10 at 1100 Florence Ave in West Evanston.

Journey Shannon of Noir d'Ebene Chocolat et Patisserie

 Journey Shannon is the Chocolate Artist behind Noir d'Ebene Chocolat et Patisserie, an online boutique of mouth-melting deliciousness. She works out of the commercial kitchen in the basement of the Family Focus building in Evanston, where her creations range from turtles to chocolate dipped coconut macaroons, all made from scratch.

Born and raised in Evanston, Journey attend after school programs at Family Focus in her youth, and returns to the building in adulthood as a chef and program counselor. Journey is in the building everyday, spending 10-12 hours in the kitchen transforming cacao nibs, flour, eggs, vanilla beans and sugar into delicious chocolates - doing exactly what makes her very happy. Journey shines in the kitchen, singing and smiling; the taste of her chocolates and pastries is evidence she is doing what she loves.

In this interview we talk about Journey’s 7 years in the business, her creative expression through this culinary art and where she plans to grow.

Fran Joy, prolific, expressive artist gives hope in dark times

Visual artist Fran Joy sees her work as a form of service, helping people find hope in dark times. Her upcoming show The Power of the Female Spirit, Feb. 1, 6-9p, at Open Studio Project, 903 Sherman Ave. in Evanston, is a departure from her portrait work and celebrates the emergence of power women are celebrating.

Our conversation focuses on how Fran expresses so much hope in her work, despite America's dark times and the violent passings of many of her subjects.

Fran's work will also be showing at Garrett Seminary and The First Baptist Church as part of Black History Month programming in Evanston and can be seen online at franjoy.com

Her work is in collections nationally. She is a member of the National Association of Woman Artists.

Melissa Matson, Professional Dancer and Movement Artist

Melissa Matson is a professional dancer/educator and mentor recently transplanted from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Evanston, IL. Artist Linda Lewis Kramer at Miishkooki Gallery

Linda Lewis Kramer has been making art for decades, starting on her dining room table and now out of her artist studio in Evanston, IL. Currently her work is on display in the Cosmic Characters group show featuring Kramer, Wayne Lent and Julie Murphy, at Miishkooki Gallery, 4517 Oakton Ave., in Skokie, thru. Jan. 13.

Kramer goes on to talk about her stance on overpopulation, her collection of work and her prolific career including installations and ceramics.

David Maurice of CocoDaco has exciting and immersive dance plans for 2018

Today on The Lisa D Show podcast we are talking with David Maurice, the interim artistic director at Foster Dance School’s CocoDaco Dance Project. Maurice is looking forward to immersive dance experiences, dance collaboration and more in 2018. Maurice’s debut show as performer, choreographer and director is “Soft Targets” in April 2018, featuring immersive experiences for audience and cast members.

Maurice has trained extensively with the former director Foster Dance School co-founder Ronn Stewart and is currently working in partnership with Sarah Goldstone, Ronn’s widow and co-founder of Foster Dance School.
David will be dancing in Evanston this weekend at “Keep Going (do it) With Love- A Tribute to Ronn Stewart”, Dec. 8-10 at Josephine Louis Theater on the Northwestern Campus. Tickets available at www.cocodaco.com.

Ronn Stewart was the founder of Cocodaco, creator of MoPeD (More People Dancing), a choreographer, brilliant dancer, teacher and inspiration. We are forever inspired by the 5 rules of MoPeD, Keep going, Suspend judgement, Listen, Remember and Do it with Love.

The tribute show will feature Ronn Stewart's work, "See Oh! Too SATURATION" created in 2007, "Garbage & Flowers" created in 2016 and new pieces by company members Ela Olarte and David Maurice.

David Maurice’s Background

David Maurice began training with César Degollado while attending the University of Arizona. In school, David performed works by Donald McKayle, Charles Weidman, George Balanchine, and Bob Fosse. As a dancer he has worked with Ronn Stewart’s Cocodaco Dance Project and Moving People Dance Santa Fe, Danielle Agami’s Ate9 Dance Company, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano’s Luna Negra Dance Theatre, Loni Landon Dance Project, Alex Ketley’s The Foundry, & Roderick George of the Forsythe Company. David serves as the resident choreographer of Condanza a San Francisco based dance company.

As a choreographer he has created work on Cocodaco Dance Project, Santa Barbara Dance Theater, and Ate9 Dance Company. He has assisted Barak Marshall’s creation The Castaways set on Ballet Rambert (London) and Loni Landon on Damon Cardasis’ award winning film Saturday Church. He has taught workshops at University of California Santa Barbara, University of California Irvine, Loyola Marymount
