Joanna Kramer Launches WARE Ceramics Studio in West Evanston (and takes over the Ceramics World)

Joanna Kramer is a bit of a legend in the ceramics arena and has several exciting projects on the horizon. She's a legend because Chelsea Clinton was recently gifted one of Joanna's "Never the less She Persisted" mugs at an ETHS event (not the F word mug), which her 7 yo daughter helped make happen, so the legendary status doesn't fall far from the tree. And this month she's opening up WARE, her very own ceramics studio in West Evanston where she'll collaborate and share space with artists like Julia Finlayson and Ben Blount.

Nicholas Barron, Blues Singer and Visual Artist

Because this podcast is designed to be "low tech" on purpose and to sound like a live-radio interview/real conversation between two humans, I rarely, if ever, know where the conversations will go. My task is to find interesting and creative humans working on interesting and creative projects and record a 20 minute conversation with them, in the hopes that I will create an interesting and creative podcast. Nicholas Barron has been making a living as a blues singer for 32 years, singing blues, emulating the voices of the great jazz and blues singers he heard from his mother's record collection. In today's conversation we talk about sounding "black" intentionally (and successfully) as a white blues/jazz singer and connecting with your audience, even when they are surprised to see a white performer at a Blues Club.

Candid and funny and incredibly open, this conversation shows how deeply Nicholas cares for his craft and the art of blues. We barely get to the topic of Nicholas' painting career, which started less than 10 years ago with his dad helping hang his first show in Chicago, which sold more than 80% of his works on display. A strong first showing.

Bio: Chicago-based singer-songwriter-guitarist Nicholas Barron was called "undeniable" by the great James Taylor who introduced him as the launch artist for the New York Times emerging artists series at Joe's pub in New York City, "Amazing" by Jay Leno, and "the real deal" by Wayne Jackson of the legendary Memphis horns who recorded on his CD "Love Soldier".

He recorded that CD in Los Angeles with famed producer/mixer Dave Way, who got the Memphis Horns on the record which got him to the folks who made him the launch artist for The New York Times emerging artists series at Joe’s pub in New York City.

Nicholas started as a street performer in London and then Chicago, where he founded CASA (coalition for the advancement of street art) to fight the city of chicago who were trying to ban it, and won!

He is one of the most unique guitarists around, mixing mouth percussion with funky baselines and chords and sounding like a whole band by himself.

His last CD "Two of one Mind" was funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign in November 2014. It's 10 songs of blues infused acoustic songs in the classic world of Clapton, Hiatt, Raitt, etc.

He has opened for some of the greatest artists of our time including: BB King, Al Green, Buddy Guy, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, Dave Mason, John Martyn, Johnny Cash, and on and on!

Our guest Ken Krimstein is a Writer, Cartoonist, Right fielder, Professor in the College of Communications at DePaul University in Chicago, father, neighbor, husband, citizen and friend. 

We talk about Ken's work as a cartoonist for the New Yorker, one of the most competitive creative endeavors anyone can pursue. The cartoon below, published in the Harvard Business Review this month, is referred to in the interview and a strong example of Ken's talent.

Because this interview is unedited it plays like a live-radio interview, it's 100% authentic and flawed which is why we kept the part where Ken spilled hot coffee on his leg (7:59) and "yeows" really loud.

The Lisa D Show is Back!

Tuesday, March 11, 2011, was the last time I posted on this blog, telling fans that I would make a move to a new radio show platform. Since 2011 I've been "radio silent" and not doing anything in front of a microphone. Today I am excited to announce that "The Lisa D Show" is BACK in the form of a weekly podcast. 

For those of you meeting me for the first time, I'm a former radio talk show host. My work as a radio personality in El Paso, Texas, from 2005- 2011, was beyond enjoyable and rewarding; I was paid to talk to humans for 1-3 hours a day on live, call-in radio. My radio shows took many forms; political talk show host on a call-in station, lifestyle talk radio host for "Charlando con La Gringa" (translation: chit chat with the white girl) on airwaves out of Juarez, Mexico, and host of "The Lisa D Show" a weekday call-in talk radio show featuring guest interviews and cultural news of the day. "The Lisa D Show" was my longest run as a talk radio show host, honoring me with a slick logo!

When my family left El Paso, TX, for Evanston, IL, in 2011, I had intentions of setting up shop on a new platform ... it took me 6 years! Thank you returning fans for waiting for my voice to reappear and welcome new fans to my podcast, "The Lisa D Show." You can look forward to conversations with creatives, roughly 20 minutes in duration, posted on a weekly basis. I believe creatives (of all kinds) make our planet a more connected, interesting and beautiful place to live. My energy and enthusiasm for my guests will be consistent, I don't invite guests whose work I don't admire. This podcast will 100% FOTP (Focus on the Positive) and isn't a criticism-based platform.
