Christie Russert's Golden State of Mind and Design

Christie Russert has long been fascinated by the look and feel of skateboarding culture, leading her into a life of skateboarding, snowboarding and graphic design.

Our discussion follows her career from 13yo on, starting it the DIY screen printing studio in her parent’s basement to exhibiting skate decks on the walls of Brothers K, which is where I was introduced to Russert. Recently Russert’s day job offered the opportunity for “Leapers” to work on a passion project, with the help of Chicago’s Experience Institute. The Leaps program was the catalyst for her most recent endeavor (using a Leap Kit), launching her online store “Sunshine Canteen” where she sells her graphic designs to shoppers wanting to live among objects that offer a California, Golden State of Mind. Joey Garfield on The Lisa D Show podcast, how dope is that? Joey talks about his Mound Town art show up at 1100 Florence Ave through May 20 in Evanston. Joey is inspired to create a new type of street art with mounds and skateboard sculpture, using found objects like mounds of dirt and snow and forest debris. Joey finds beauty in his natural environment and begs us all to pause, and look at things differently and fall in love with vinyl and skitching.

Joey Garfield Bio

Joey Garfield is an award winning filmmaker, photographer and visual artist. An Evanston native who called New York City home for almost two decades. While there he immersed himself in the Lower East Side art scene and became a founding member of the Tokyo/New York art collective The Barnstormers as well as a participant in The Beautiful Losers. His work focuses on rhythm, flow, simplicity, and attitude with a deep concentration on honoring and documenting the counter cultures of his youth which saved his life creatively and spiritually. Repurposed wood, spray paint, found objects and vinyl are the tools of his trade.

His current show at 1100 Florence Gallery is entitled Mound Town. It is an ongoing project of photographs profiling different mound characters in their natural outdoor environment. All mounds are rare because no mound is permanent.  They are made of found objects, vinyl albums, and natural mounds.
