Beth Adler on her new series of Monoprints inspired by Ikebana

To listen to this interview from your browser, click on the white arrow above in the orange circle. Or visit the show at soundcloud.com/lisa-degliantoni

We visit Beth in her art studio on Florence Ave in West Evanston that she shares with artist Alice George, to talk about her upcoming show at Firecat Projects, where she finds time to make new work and being openness to the randomness in printmaking. Visit bethadler.net for more information.

Show Info: April 20, Opening Reception, “What I've Learned From Flower Arranging,” a show of monoprints by Beth Adler and ceramics by Nancy Gardner, inspired by the artists’ explorations of flowers and plants.

Though she’s worked with natural forms for years, Beth Adler found a new opportunity to explore colors, patterns, and geometry when she happened on an illustrated book about Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. By modifying the book--painting on and adding to the pages--she discovered an intimate visual language that became the basis for her new series of monoprints.

Additional Events:
• Flower arranging workshop by Larkspur Flowers & Design, free and open to the public, with vases by Nancy Gardner available for purchase. Tuesday April 24, 6-9 PM.
• Designer showcase, open to design professionals. Thursday May 3, 2-7 PM.
• Artists talk, Saturday May 19, 1 PM  Exhibition is open during regular gallery hours, M-Sat 10-4.
Firecat Projects is located at 2124 N Damen Ave, Chicago.

12.6.10: Today on The Lisa D Show

Today on The Lisa D Show at noon on KHRO 1150 AM we will interview Pastor Tom Brown from the Word of Life Church. Brown is a minister born and raised in El Paso but has recently moved into the spotlight because of a controversial measure he put on the November ballot, which passed with 55% voter approval, to repeal health benefits for domestic partners. The impetus for this measure is Brown's beliefs that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice (one that will send a soul to hell) and that it can be cured, thus saving the soul.

Most recently a group of LGBT community supporters rallied for love outside of Pastor Brown's church and this radio interview will act as an extension of that rally. We've gathered questions from rally supporters and attendees and will address them live on the air. Thank you for submitting your questions to thelisadshow@gmail.com.

Also, we'll talk to our good friend Chris Babcock. His standing Monday morning interview is a great chance for all of us to catch up on news that matters and find out what's on Chris' mind.

Breaking News: Chico's Tacos Opens Downtown El Paso Location

Okay, this headline is not true, but wouldn't that be great? Maybe the next time you're at Chico's you can mention this grand idea.

Periodically I sift through the Newspaper Tree archives to see if old topics I used to write about are still current, and Chico's Tacos seems to be always current, in addition to my contempt for The El Paso Times. (Broken record much?)

This op ed was originally published in June 2009 and it’s creepy how relevant this column is and still no Cheesecake Factory in Downtown El Paso.

**
El Paso’s Cheescake Factory culture, and how Chico’s Tacos can heal us

by Lisa Degliantoni

El Paso Times editor Chris Lopez blogged recently that what Downtown needs to draw crowds during the evenings and weekends is an anchor restaurant like Cheesecake Factory. Just in time for “Go Local” week, our English-language daily paper that’s owned by some guy in Denver starts the chant for a chain in Downtown. Priceless.
Posted on June 23, 2009

Of course the fallout from Lopez gunning for a chain restaurant to open in Downtown hasn’t been that significant; just a few rants from readers to include “Come on El Pasoans and El Paso Times! Let’s support local instead of national chains!” But what Lopez is stating with this innocuous blog post is the idea that what we’ve got locally isn’t good enough. Wrong. (Click here to read Lopez’s post.)

Exhibit A: Chico’s Tacos. Last March, I took a handheld to Chico’s Tacos on Montana/Chelsea and shot a 1:50 minute video of co-worker illustrating how he eats Chico’s Tacos. The video was uploaded to You Tube and to date, more than 11,000 people have viewed it, posting comments like “I @#!%$^& love Chico’s!” Cheesecake Factory, Shmeezecake Factory. Hey, Paul Foster, here’s a free idea, put a Chico’s Tacos in the base of your new Mills Building and you will be crowned “El Rey del El Paso.” (Click here to watch the video.)

Exhibit B: I was on the radio weekdays for about six months and I could be conversing about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, but if I said “Chico’s Tacos” out loud at any point of the show, numerous calls would pour in. Each caller would wax poetic about how much they love Chico’s Tacos. It showed such loyalty for the brand. No wonder Chico’s doesn’t advertise.
Exhibit C: Recently, I was at a Chico’s Tacos at 1:45 a.m. and the place was packed. Not one single table was open and everyone was there. I saw prom dresses, guys in bands, families with babies up too late, old men and old women. All ages, all backgrounds, everyone eating floating tacos.

Conclusion: Thousands of El Pasoans love to eat Chico’s Tacos (there are over 7,000 Facebook fans on the Chico’s Tacos fan page) and everyone knows that the Chico’s owners won’t go west of Executive with a new place, so why not lure them Downtown?

Since joining the El Paso Times, Lopez has done a good job allowing some of his reporters to do what they do best — Ramon Bracamontes’ recent features are one example — so why not recognize that if El Paso did what it did best, in this case serve up an authentic El Paso brand, the crowds would come?

In his yearnings for a Cheesecake Factory, Lopez highlights one of the greatest mysteries of El Paso: How the minority culture (the Cheesecake culture) manages to disregard the majority culture (the Chico’s Tacos culture) in every way. From ignorance of language to food to art to flora and fauna, I’m always amazed at El Paso’s Cheesecake culture and how cloistered it continues to be after all these years.

But I digress. I say we go with something proven to work, like a Chico’s Tacos, and put it right on San Jacinto Plaza and then watch the crowds come to Downtown. If that happens, Chris Lopez, I promise to buy you a double double.

The live interview segment of the show features several students from Community Scholars who are reporting on the state of sex education in Texas. What's interesting about this report is it's the first time in the history of presenting that Community Scholars received protests and actually had to call police to remove protesters from the building. What did they discover about sex ed in Texas? What are people so afraid of the Scholars discovering? We'll discuss all this and more.

The El Paso Transnational Trolley Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EL PASO, TX—(November 8, 2010) If you've come across the mysterious black and white poster images of the trolley driver with a hat dotting various parts of downtown El Paso, then you've probably seen the work of visual artist Peter Svarzbein! The poster series titled “The El Paso Transnational Trolley Project” is a visual art campaign for a make believe transit system aimed at raising awareness of what one vision of the future could be, says Svarzbein, if commuters from El Paso and Juarez felt safe again commuting to and from both cities via a transnational trolley system. With slogans like “Here to Make The Border Safe Again” and “Let Us Take You Home On Either Side of The Border,” the objective of the project is to evoke curiosity, and stir hope for some normalcy in the border region from the surge of violence and uncertainty that has plagued El Paso’s sister-city, Juarez.

“Although I have lived in New York City for the last 6 years, I was born and raised in El Paso and have many fond memories of the area which raised me,” said Svarzbein. “My use of fictional constructions is the belief that more traditional projects exploring the border have become cliché and easy to dismiss. The viewer is likely to have become desensitized to scenes showing violence, sadness or fear to describe the border area. My project is not about the realism of actually building a trolley right now between two cities. My project is about the realism and importance in imagining, where real power comes from perceived power. The El Paso Transnational Trolley is a metaphor for a positive and hopeful future between the two cities, united.”

The uniquely-compelling art series is the first of its kind in El Paso and combines public art and performance art. “My ultimate goal is to encourage a positive attitude towards border-crossing past, present, and future. If it brings more awareness and want for a mass transit fixed-rail system in El Paso, and, hopefully Juarez then that's great.”

The artist will be at Sunland Park Mall to introduce the trolley conductor in a performance art event in front of the Greenery at Sears from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27th. And, on Sunday, Nov 28th the artist will provide a media photo opportunity as he officially puts up his series posters across from 111 S. Mesa; 1-4 p.m.

Artpace Billboard: Executive heading East from Paisano

Are you driving around El Paso wondering what the big hand on the billboard is?

http://www.artpace.org/

El Paso is one of the markets that is currently featuring a very unique art project.

Artpace San Antonio “serves as a laboratory for the creation and advancement of international and contemporary art. They believe that art is a dynamic social force that inspires individuals and defines cultures. Their residencies, exhibitions, and education programs nurture the creative expression of emerging and established artists, while actively engaging youth and adult audiences. “ (www.artpace.org)

Artpace is a non-profit public charity, and is greatly appreciative of Clear Channel Outdoor’s support in realizing their Felix Gonzalez-Torres Billboard Exhibition. The late Gonzalez-Torres, who was a resident artist at Artpace shortly before his death, created a body of art specifically designed for display on outdoor media—billboards.

This exhibit is showing in the major Texas markets to reach a regional audience. This exhibition will be married to PR efforts to raise awareness and will be tied in to Artpace’s 15th year anniversary branding campaign.
