Traveling to Haiti - January 6, 2011 by Chrissy Rich Kleberg
Dear friends,
I will be traveling to Haiti with my husband on January 6, 2011 with a nonprofit group, We Hear Your Voice. The organization was started by Jay’s cousin, Justin Yarborough, and a law school classmate of his, Kennedy Granger. The inspiration behind Justin’s desire to help Haiti came after his successful trip to rescue three children and reunite them with their mother. You can see their CNN Interview with Wolf Blitzer (http://wehearyourvoice.com/home/?p=115).
We Hear Your Voice, in partnership with other organizations, plans to do the following:
# Facilitate companies, aid organizations, and nonprofits with resources and innovative ideas to help Haitians recover by means of developing models for sustainability.
# Focus on rebuilding schools and orphanages, and help foster self-sufficiency by creating jobs through social entrepreneurship (rather than plain cash and foreign aid). In time, we hope to help educate future leaders.
# Film a documentary. We want to use the power of media to inspire people to learn how they can help Haiti, and better understand a country rich in history and heritage. You can view the trailer here: http://wehearyourvoice.com/home/?page_id=129.
Justin will be leaving for Haiti on December 14th to begin Project Thirty: $30 for 30 Days. Below is a note from Justin:
“I’m turning 30 this December and celebrating it by moving to Haiti for 30 days from December 14th – January 12th, with the 30th day falling on the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake. During this time I will live at the tent city and orphanage we have been helping support since January. Run by our friend Ben Constant, the tent city camp is located at the National Soccer Stadium in downtown Port-au-Prince. Ben’s sister, Marie Jo Poux, founded Foyer Espoir Pour les Enfants, the orphanage in the Delmas district – which has become something of a second home for me recently. This will be our 7th trip to Haiti this year, and we need your help to continue to ease the growing despair and hardship suffered by those we have grown to call friends, and some even family. Although it has been nearly 11 months since the earthquake, their conditions haven't improved as not a cent of the $1.15 billion the U.S. promised for rebuilding has arrived."
Jay and I will be visiting with the kids from the orphanage, Foyer Espoir Pour les Enfants, and will be taking as many supplies to them as we can possible carry with us to Haiti. We would love to give these kids something to smile about over the holidays since they have been away from their homes and living in the tent city for almost a year. Below is a list of items that we would like to take with us that the kids desperately need:
- School supplies
- Small, easy to pack toys
- General Hygiene Supplies:
Toothbrush/Toothpaste
Soap
Shampoo
Hand Sanitizer
Water Purification Tablets
- Medicine:
Children’s Tylenol-liquid
Children’s Benadryl-liquid
Benadryl Cream
Calamine Lotion
Children’s Chewable Vitamins
Triple Antibiotic Ointment
Children’s Cough and Cold-liquid (Dimetapp)
Hydrogen Peroxide
Rubbing Alcohol
Band-Aids/other general first aid items
Pedialyte

Love Rally in the News: Group Forms To Counter Ordinance That Takes Away City Benefits
This story by ABC-7 Reporter Maria Garcia gives a good perspective on where we are at in terms of our efforts against the El Pasoans For Traditional Family Values recent voter approved removal of domestic partners benefits for the city.
This weekend we are meeting with lawyers to write the language of the petition and by Monday will have copies for your support and signature. Check back into this blog and The Lisa D Show for updates, also fan me on Facebook to keep udpated. Facebook
EL PASO, Texas -- A new group is considering starting a petition to convince El Paso City Council to add a Non-Discrimination Clause to the city charter that would trump the voter-passed initiative slated to take away the health insurance of gay and unwed partners of city employees.
The voter-passed initiative, put on the ballot by a petition from local religious group, El Pasoans For Traditional Family Values, passed 55 to 45-percent last month. The group has always insisted their only target was to take away the health insurance of gay and unwed partners of city employees. According to city representatives, only 19 employees signed up for those benefits, which were approved by City Council in a budget meeting last year.
However, the City Attorney said that because the initiative only mentioned city employees, their spouses and their legal dependents, more than 200 unintended city employees and retirees will lose their health insurance, too.
"We're not a place that says that certain individuals should be discriminated against, for any reason", said local attorney Lyda Ness. She, along with radio host Lisa Degliantoni, or "Lisa D" are considering gathering the 1,548 signatures of registered city voters to get their initiative on the May ballot. It's a last option, since Representative Susie Byrd said she plans to ask Council, once again, to consider adding the Non-Discrimination clause. If the council rejects Byrd's idea, said Ness, then they would petition.

Dec 10th Hundreds will march to denounce racism, hate and xenophobia in Texas and New Mexico.
Posted on Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
HUNDREDS WILL MARCH TO DENOUNCE RACISM, HATE AND XENOPHOBIA IN TEXAS AND NEW MEXICO.
DECEMBER 10th (International Human Rights Day)
“Simultaneous Marches will Take Place in Downtown El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, NM in Opposition of Anti-Immigrant Agendas”
El Paso, TX/Southern New Mexico- The Border Network for Human Rights, a grassroots organization in El Paso, with more than 13 years organizing communities, is preparing two simultaneous demonstrations in El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, NM in which hundreds of border residents will express their frustration and disappointment on the racist proposal been considered in the Texas Legislature, and the intention of the elected New Mexico Governor to target immigrant families in the state.
Intolerance, racism, and hate have come to such extent that newly elected officials are proposing to further criminalize immigrants in the state of Texas and New Mexico. Some initiatives attack the fundamental values of our society by depriving of basic services and protections to thousands of children and families living in Texas; another proposal would also require school districts and state agencies to report undocumented children and their families for possible deportation.
This wave of xenophobia also proposes to eliminate the use of Spanish in any State Documents in Texas, impacting tolerance and cultural diversity. Border Network for Human Rights believes these proposals, if implemented, would be catastrophic for our families, our economy and our general well-being in New Mexico and Texas.
A clear objective of participating in this event is to show America’s historical leadership in the defense and promotion of freedom, justice and pursue of happiness for all, and that Americans do not tolerate hatred, racism, and prejudice.
Therefore Border Network for Human Rights is holding a major day of action this upcoming Friday December 10th, and the convening information is as follows:
March against Racism and Xenophobia
in Downtown El Paso, Texas
Starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Armijo Park
(710 E. Seventh Avenue )
Ending at the Texas State Building
(401 E. Franklin)
March against Racism and Xenophobia
in Downtown Las Cruces N.M.
Starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Apodaca Park
(801 E. Madrid Avenue )
Ending at Las Cruces City Hall
(700 N. Main Street)
Visual: Hundreds of border families; Banner and American flags
