8.30.10: Today's show

Today on "The Lisa D Show" at noon MST on KHRO 1150 AM we'll interview Chris Babcock about the news stories of the day that matter; Mexican cities will not celebrate The Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16, the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the continuing drug war and the grand opening of "Man Made Thunder" at the El Paso Museum of History.

For the live interview segment we'll talk to Nancy Hanson from the Lower Valley Housing Corporation, a nonprofit corporation, that has helped low-income families build over 360 new homes since 1990 in El Paso County through a program called "mutual self-help construction." Mutual self-help construction is where LVHC forms groups of 8-12 families and teaches them how to build at least 65% of their homes. The balance of the work is done by professional contractors. This practice decreases the cost of the home significantly, making purchasing a home very affordable.

Patty was founder and director of the Patty James Cooking School and Nutrition Center, the first certified organic cooking school and nutrition center in the country. Patty will discuss how to teach kids to say "More Vegetables, Please!"

We're featuring Patty on the air now for several reasons; we are in full swing for lunch and dinner schedules that have to work around school and sports schedules and we are dealing with very high rates of obesity in adolescents.

The statistics are startling:
•16 percent of children (over 9 million) 6-19 years old are overweight or obese - a number that has tripled since 1980
•Nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food every day, resulting in approximately six extra pounds per year, per child
•Only 35 percent of adolescents meet current physical activity recommendations
•We are now seeing the first generation that will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents

Man-Made Thunder

El Paso Museum of History Presents
“Man-Made Thunder”: The History of Racing in the Borderland
An exhibit opening to the public Saturday, August 28, 2010

The desert southwest, with its dry climate and large open spaces, has been an ideal spot to test the speed of a variety of vehicles over the past century. "Man-Made Thunder": The History of Racing in the Borderland tells the story of the men and women, tracks, and race cars that have been part of automobile racing in El Paso and Juarez. Curated by racing and 20th century El Paso history enthusiast Chris Babcock (www.elpasoracinghistory.org), the exhibit includes actual race cars, helmets, fire suits, signal flags, race track programs, photographs, and interactive advertising displays from MSD Ignition, an El Paso company that has produced race car components for the past forty years.

Please join the El Paso Museum of History in an off-track glimpse of veteran cars and paraphernalia from a sport which nationally rivals football in viewer attendance. The exhibit opens to the public Saturday, August 28, 2010. For more information call Barbara Angus at 351-3588 or email at angusbx@elpasotexas.gov.
