Christine Foerster, creator of farm.stand, will be our first guest on "The Lisa D Show" today from 1 - 2 p.m. on KHRO 1150 AM. Tune in or stream the show from www.talkradio1150.com. Call the show @ 915.880.4376.

farm.stand is project based on a mobile, modular farm stand, which embodies an important relationship between art and the environment, art object and produce. During 2010-2011 farm.stand will serve as the meeting point and delivery system for a number of interventions, performances and art objects which will be part of an effort to engage with “do it yourself” technologies concerned with agriculture.

Christine Foerster works in a variety of visual media including textiles, performance, installation and mixed media painting. Her most recent work invites participants to reconsider their relationship to urban private and public space through their interaction with Shell-ter-wear, a medium that transforms from garment to a temporary shelter-pod.

farm.stand is currently on display at the UTEP Department of Art Biennial Faculty Exhibition at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts.

Anne Giangiulio, also on display as part of the Biennial show, will join us to discuss her graphic design posters in the show. Giangiulio creates posters after concerts have come through El Paso, most notably the family running to Beck after his performance in 2009.

Both of these women represent very different genres and have some of the best works in the show. For more information on the Rubin Center, visit http://rubincenter.utep.edu.

1.27.10: Blogs I like

Caption: Woman with glasses, January 23, 2010, published on fiveblocksaround.blogspot.com

"ABOUT THIS BLOG

109 N. Mesa (El Paso, Texas) Is the address of the building where I live. I live in a seven story building that houses six loft like apartments and retail stores on the first floor. This blog is about the people, places and things five blocks around this building and sometimes in this building. No more no less."

In addition to being interesting and beautiful, this blog has managed to spark quite a debate on my Facebook page. First take a look at this blog, browse the photos, then read through some of the comments from my Facebook page (Lisa Degliantoni) on this post.

We'll be interviewing the creator of this blog in a few weeks on "The Lisa D Show," but first I want this conversation to gain some traction and make sure that I interview as many people and view points that I can.

Arturo Arce is a graphic designer graduating from UTEP this May. “He was born and raised in El Paso and always knew he wanted to own his own business one day. As a kid, Arturo saw the term "Hell Paso" used by a graffiti artist and has always felt that this was a catchy nickname for our city. Since then he has heard people refer to El Paso as "Hell Paso" for various reasons, many of which are negative. Last year, he started his own clothing line and decided to call the line Hellpaso, hoping to change the connotation of the nickname and start a local brand for the city. Currently, the clothing line includes hooded sweatshirts, and t-shirts for men women and children. All of these items can be purchased online at www.hellpasostore.com. The Hellpaso brand also includes an upcoming skateboard line, available in the spring. These skateboards will be sold both online and at Crooks Skate Shop on 5640 Montanta and 1791 N. Zaragoza Rd. He is currently working with Jesse Perez, owner of Crooks Skate Shop, in hopes of developing a project which would include donating skateboard decks to lower income children. By providing these children with an alternative lifestyle, Arturo hopes to deter them away from drugs, gangs or alcohol.”

We’ll also feature Dr. N.A. Adams of Texas Tech, author of Nutirition for the Eye, a book on how to protect your vision. The book is published by local publisher Stanley Publishing Co. This Thurdsay, Jan. 28, Dr. Adams will talk at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine on “Introduction to Eye Nutrition.” For more information about this book visit www.stanleypublishing.com.
