Art in the Time of Corona Interview Series
w Evanston Made Members

The "Art in the Time of Corona" interview series features interviews Evanston Made members about the projects that have come to life during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Listen to my conversation with Jamie Thome about her public art installation, outside her house on Seward Street. Below is Jamie's call for people to engage with the work and to create their own.

For the past few days, I've been making an art installation (of sorts) outside, on the tree in front of our south Evanston two flat. I'm using embroidered words that were part of an installation I did in 2016 at the People's Church in Chicago (all over the huge second floor sanctuary's overlook into the main sanctuary---lots of words, lots of embroidery thread).

I'm adding a word a day, taking a picture, sharing on my FB page, and hoping that people walking by on their daily get-outside-for-some-sunshine-and-fresh-air-while-also-staying-6ft-away-from-others moments will enjoy seeing them.

I'm also inspired by Lisa's putting a window gallery up at 1100 Florence, and hope this is my way of doing that sort of thing, since my windows aren't easily seen from the sidewalk.

My CHALLENGE to you all, the most awesome artists in all of the world, is to create something outside of YOUR place as well, for the same reason. Post here, post on your page, add to it each day, or whatever you want. Share your work in a new way, with the outside world, and spread love and kindness and beauty for those walking by.

AND!! If you're a fiber artist or are painting on rocks, or have something to add (that won't damage the tree), and would like to add to MY installation outside of our two flat in south Evanston, PM me and I'll send you the address. I'm happy to see how it could change with other collaborators' contributions.

Let's make art happen, all over Evanston, apart, but TOGETHER.

Jamie works primarily with books, collages, installations, and layering oil pastels on top of things. As a teaching artist, she visits public schools to integrate the arts into the classroom curriculum and works at the Evanston Public Library as a library assistant wherever she is needed.

Today's podcast features an interview with Lea Pinsky of Evanston Mural Arts Program (EMAP), talking about the six murals going up in Evanston. By the time you hear this interview, the murals will almost all be complete, with the talks of more on the horizon.

Thursday, October 12, the public is invited to a reception and party to meet the muralists who are activating Evanston's wall with EMAP's help. Join the party at Hyatt House on Chicago Ave., 5:30 p.m., click here for details.

The six muralists include artists; Shawn Bullen, Ruben Aguirre, Nick Gottleing, Dustin Harris & Lea Pinsky, Alfonso Nieves Piloto Ruiz and Jordan Nickel. The murals can be found on this map under Public/Installation Art.

Evanston Mural Arts Program (EMAP) is Art Encounter’s new public art initiative. Art Encounter has launched the program to help community groups, artists, residents, and business districts uplift their neighborhoods and strengthen their communities through mural art. EMAP works with the City of Evanston, local business districts, and area groups to provide curatorial leadership and project management support towards shared goals of community enrichment, civic engagement, and beautification. EMAP is overseen by Dustin Harris and Art Encounter’s Education and Outreach Director Lea Pinsky. Harris and Pinsky, both muralists and public art project managers, have been inspiring public spaces through art since 2005.  Click here to read more.

The public is invited to take a self-guided tour of the murals ANYTIME, but especially Saturday, October 14, 12-5 p.m., during Evanston Art Tour. Maps are available online (click here for map) or in print at Evanston Art Center, stumble & relish, or Cultivate on Main St.

Amanda Evanston, Painter of Canvases and Garage Doors

Meet Amanda Evanston, a prolific painter and supporter of the arts. She is a resident of Evanston, IL, and moves most of her work via her website amandaevanston.com.

On this episode we talk about making a living as an artist (she sells work online and teaches workshops) and cultivating a community of art lovers. We also weave in several good quotes from Amanda's mother, who was a huge fan of beautifying your living space with original art.

For those of you living in the area, you can meet Amanda Evanston on Oct. 14, during the Evanston Art Tour (click here for the map), 12-5 p.m., where she'll turn her front porch into an art gallery at the corner of Dempster and Florence. Learn more at evanstonmade.com

Lastly, Amanda recently created a mural of flowers on her garage doors, which you can see driving south down Florence from Dempster. We are grateful for artists like Amanda who share their talent with the city they live in.

The Lisa D Show with Jason Brown

Our guest Jason Brown (aka The Zip Code Kid) talks about the upcoming WinterHeARTh event Rocks & Rolls on Feb. 18 at Ridgeville Parks District, Collective Cartography and how our places make us and we make our places and embellishment and happenstance.

Jason has worked as a community arts advocate and organizer in the Evanston community since 2013. Jason initiated the annual Winter HeARTh public community art series in 2013, while co-chairing the Public Art Committee. He has also helped produce community and public art works and programming through Art Encounter, The Big Draw Evanston, Downtown Evanston, Evanston Made, the Evanston Community Foundation and the City of Evanston. Jason promises you that he leaves Evanston, occasionally.
As an independent artist, Jason, also under the alias “The Zip Code Kid,” runs the brand Geocommunetrics, a multidisciplinary design practice that seeks to explore the ideas of space, place, home and belonging using abstract, minimal design. Check out the work of TZCK at geocommunetrics.com or on Instagram @thezipcodekid.

Rocks & Rolls
Saturday, February 18 at 1 PM - 5 PM
Ridgeville Parks District, 908 Seward Street

Warm the winter blues by sharing bread and soup with neighbors, and brighten your Saturday by painting with friends!

Rocks & Rolls will bring us around Evanston-made bread and tasty soup from Lucky Platter and Cross Rhodes, while we hang out and paint hopeful flowers on rocks and "plant" them outside. A craft and a snack for artists and non-artists alike, this Winter HeARTH event hopes to warm you up and keep life colorful.

All ages and families welcome. Share bread and soup with us, and bring your own bread and soup recipes to share! (Don't worry, this snack's on us, so leave the real stuff at home.) Bring a few rocks from home to paint, or paint some ours. Paint and brushes supplied.

Painted rocks can be brought home, or added to the installation in the Ridgeville Garden, right off Ridge Avenue.

Geocommunetrics pieces are experimental explorations, visualizing places as data and design, to provided backdrops for life and lenses for learning.
With Geocommunetrics pieces, The Zip Code Kid (TZCK) imagines how we see "home" and "Self" as a work of place and time, art and science, and, well, a bit of magical thinking.

The Lisa D Show is a podcast celebrates creatives. Listen to 20 minute, unedited conversations with host Lisa D. and the creatives who make our world a more connected, interesting and beautiful place to live. Podcasts will be posted at https://thelisadshow.blogspot.com

This podcast is recorded at 1100 Florence, an art event space in West Evanston, IL, owned and operated by Lisa Degliantoni and Dave Ford.
