Due to popular demand, El Paso Opera has added a third performance to its “Madama Butterfly” schedule. There will be a matinee on Sunday, March 13, at 2:30 p.m. This is in addition to performances Thursday, March 10, and Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. All performances are at the Abraham Chavez Theatre.

“Madama Butterfly” marks El Paso Opera’s return to grand opera, with full sets and costumes. “Butterfly” is also one of the most popular operas of all time. It’s been two years since El Paso Opera has staged a grand opera (“Magic Flute” was the last, in 2009), and audiences are in for a treat with an Emmy®-winning production and all-star cast.

But “grand” doesn’t mean elitist — at least, not in El Paso.

El Paso Opera artistic and general director David Grabarkewitz has made it his mission to bring opera to the entire El Paso-Juárez community, as well as to traditional opera patrons.

So he’s made sure that promotions for the “Madama Butterfly” reach a Spanish-speaking audience and most neighborhoods of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez.
And for the first time, El Paso Opera advertised on a billboard in Ciudad Juárez and established a toll-free phone number for ticket-buyers in Mexico.

The opera also stretched its Spanish promotion in El Paso to bench ads in the Mission Valley and the bustling East side. A Spanish-language billboard is visible on I-10 West at Lomaland.
“Opera for All!” has been the motto of Grabarkewitz’s mission, and El Paso Opera will continue its Opera for All series in advance of “Madama Butterfly.” Opera for All events run from 60-75 minutes and will feature performances by members of the “Butterfly” cast.

Opera for All performances will be presented in English and Spanish and are open to the public free of charge.

Grabarkewitz used his influence as the resident stage director for the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center to ensure the highest quality Butterfly production in El Paso.

“I requested favors from the amazing cast and designer, and we've put together a phenomenal show.” Grabarkewitz said. “We’ve assembled an internationally renowned cast that is second-to-none.”

Indeed, Grabarkewitz directed several of the principal actors in an Emmy®-winning telecast for PBS performed at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Neon Desert Music Festival annual music festival organized by Splendid Sun Productions held in Downtown El Paso, TEXAS. Open Auditions for a Child Role in 'Madama Butterfly'

WHAT: Auditions for the role of Cio-Cio San’s son
WHEN: Sat., Feb. 19, at 2 p.m.
WHERE: El Paso Public Library Auditorium, 501 N. Oregon St.

El Paso Opera is looking for a child to play the role of “Trouble,” the young son of Cio-Cio San (Madama Butterfly). This is a non-speaking, non-singing role suitable for any child interested in theater; however it does require the ability to take direction.

We're looking for a child age 6-9 who is shorter than 52 inches tall. The child will appear on stage with Emmy-winning soprano Shu-Ying Li. Rehearsals begin in early March and will extend through the Madama Butterfly performance dates of Thursday, March 10, and Saturday, March 12. The Opera will contribute $500.00 to the Texas Tomorrow Fund (http://www.texastomorrowfunds.org/), a pre-paid college tuition plan, for the child selected to play the role. This will be a great adventure for one local child.

Auditions will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:00 p.m. downtown at the El Paso Public Library Auditorium. The library is located at 501 N. Oregon St.

Walgreens Volunteers Clean up Scenic Drive

Today was the first clean up to kick off Walgreens, once a month, yearlong commitment to a cleaner and more beautiful El Paso. Walgreens Community Leader, Robert Alvarez, joined more than twenty volunteers from Walgreens to collect trash along Scenic Drive.

I grabbed this photo while making my way up the hill with a trash bag of my own. As a member of the Newman Park Neighborhood Association (which borders Scenic) I try to periodically do my part and collect trash around the neighborhood. What is so rewarding about Walgreens commitment to cleaning up El Paso is their interest in Scenic, one of the city's most trafficked routes for tourism, but a street that not all of the volunteers necessarily live by. Thank you to all the volunteers who showed up from all corners of El Paso.

Review: The New City Grille is Open for Private Dinner Parties

Just last week I was invited to the New City Grille for a dinner party and the invitation confused me, as they aren't open for dinner. Come to find out, our dinner party was a private event that included a hand-printed menu, a delectable cake made for the event and drinks by an outdoor fire pit following dessert. Lucky for our party and diners seeking a different and unique experience, Thierry Oppenheimer caters private dinner parties in her restaurant, at a very affordable price.

Our dinner party began with appetizers and wine in what normally serves as the smallest of three dining rooms in the restaurant. The party started with a chic spread of wine, Pellegrino, cheese, crackers, olives and prosciutto with melon, served by a very professional wait staff.

Following the appetizers we were seated at a dining table that ran the entire length of the restaurant and sat more than 20 people. At each place setting was a 35 card with the evening's meal written out, a classy touch that is the norm for wedding receptions. The table setting was simple yet elegant done in all white and silver, with small votive candles functioning as the main source of light.

Much like dinners served in Europe, the main course was served first, a light and delicious seafood lasagna, one of Theirry's specialties. The second course was a Greek salad served with very light vinaigrette, a perfect cleanser for the palate following fish. After clearing the salad plates, small glasses filled with caramel popcorn were placed every two people and orders for tea or coffee were taken, I opted to stick with my wine.

Before opening her "down town" restaurant, Thierry enjoyed a successful career as a professional baker, a job that led her across the United States and Europe. I first met Thierry at a cover shoot for El Paso Magazine where we featured one of her four tiered wedding cakes, certainly one of our most beautiful covers. Upon returning to El Paso after a long stint away, Thierry continued to make cakes and opened up the New City Grille south of Paisano. The New City Grille is home to delicious lunches and a very packed house.

Luckily for our party, Thierry baked one of her gorgeous cakes for dessert, which she showed to each guest, earning her a round of applause before the slicing and plating. The cake was a light and tart lemon cake with a lavender icing, an ideal compliment to the evening's fare.

After dessert the party was escorted outside to the patio where chairs were set up around a fire, already burning bright, where guests finished their wine and coffee before heading home.

The New City Grille is a perfect location for a private party (no more than 40) for you and your closest friends or colleagues. The dining area is intimate and the staff is friendly and very much a part of the evening's festivities. Pricing varies based on the meal and dessert and you can call Thierry (pronounced Terry) for a quote at 915.474.7777.

Living up to it's down town description, it's hard to fathom such a unique and intimate dining experience only blocks from the Santa Fe Bridge, in such a remote section of Downtown El Paso. Give it a try for your next private party, as the atmosphere cannot be matched and the food is divine.

Tembloroso Creative Labs members Jim Ward, Kristine Ward, Armando Alvarez and Brandon Silverstein (all El Paso natives) are the team behind www.tembloroso.com, a website dedicated to creating a virtual community for El Paso visual artists and musicians, bringing awareness to a growing community of visual artists living and working in El Paso.

“With the talent and networks that our local artists have developed we felt like it was a good time to use our abilities to create a place where they can both sell their goods and increase their profiles,” said Jim Ward.

The Vagina Monologues Needs Volunteers!

Volunteers get in for free, and this is what is needed: 2 ushers, 4 people to hold up posters, 3 people to handle V.I.P., and some crew men on Friday. On Saturday, we need 2 people to pass out programs, 3 ushers, 4 people to handle V.I.P., and some crew men. We also would like people to handle donations, but we need to fill up the other positions first. Here I've attached a description of the Vagina Monologues form the FMLA-UTEP facebook page. This year, we expect to have fire dancers and contortionist perform along with other entertainment. The play will be at UTEP's Magoffin Auditorium this Friday and Saturday. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show will start at 7:30 p.m. I highly recommend this show. It's a show that consists of a whole variety of different monologues. Some are hilarious, some are touching, but all are educational in some way. My first time going was last year and I was blown a way by all that the show offered.

About the Vagina Monologues:

A SHOW YOU DON'T WANNA MISS! The Vagina Monologues is a play which is part of a larger movement to stop violence against women. The play deals with a wide range of the female experience and is an eye-opener for most males. Last year we raised over $14,000 with most going to the El Paso Child Crisis Center and 10% going to the City of Joy in the Congo. The Spotlight this year is Haiti due to the high levels of violence against women and girls, specifically the increased rates of sexual violence since the devastating earthquake that took place in January 2010. All funds raised through the Spotlight Campaign will be used to support a revolutionary national campaign in Haiti lead by a coalition of women activists - including longtime V-Day activist Elvire Eugene - that will address sexual violence through art, advocacy, safe shelter and legal services. 90% of the procedes will locally benefit the Reynolds Home ( a homeless women's shelter)! A silent auction will be held featuring local artists and vendors. Local non profits will be tabling and disseminating information. Help us reach our goal of $20,000 this year! WHO:Keep El Paso Beautiful in partnership with the local Walgreens, the City of El Paso, and the Hunt Family Foundation are working together to keep one of El Paso’s greatest assets, Scenic Drive, free of litter and debris.

WHAT:Walgreens is leading by example and giving back to the community by partnering with KEPB and the City to clean up Scenic Drive. This Sunday is the first clean up to kick off Walgreens, once a month, yearlong commitment to a cleaner and more beautiful El Paso. Walgreens Community Leader, Robert Alvarez, said it is important to give back to your community and participate in efforts to keep El Paso beautiful.

WHEN: Sunday, February 13, 2011 beginning at 10 a.m. until noon

WHERE: Walgreens volunteers will be meeting at 10 a.m. at the entrance of Scenic Drive at the top of Rim Road. The clean up will be taking place during Scenic Sunday when Scenic Drive is closed to vehicular traffic.

WHY: During the day, Scenic Drive offers an exquisite view of El Paso and Juarez. At night, it is lovely view of the unending lights from the stars, two sister cities and two different countries. Unfortunately, Scenic Drive is daily trashed with fast food bags, beer cans, plastic and glass bottles, cigarettes, cups, and plastic bags. As one of El Paso’s premier places to visit and take out of town guests it is extremely important to keep Scenic Drive pristine. “I am thrilled that Walgreens has come on board with KEPB. Their commitment to cleaning up one of El Paso’s greatest assets will have a positive impact on the quality of life for all El Pasoans. Design El Paso's Future at tonight's Comprehensive Plan Westside Charrette

Following the unanimous adoption of the Connecting El Paso Plan, the Dover, Kohl & Partners planning team is back in El Paso to focus on the City’s Westside! The upcoming two-week charrette will address the planning areas of Northwest, Central, Northeast and Fort Bliss. The first event is a Hands-on Design Session for the Central Planning Area on Thursday, February 10 (5:30pm – 8:00pm) at the Bowie High School Cafeteria. Additional Hands-on Sessions, an Open Design Studio and Public Presentations will be held throughout the next two weeks.

Voice Over Work: Cats and Dogs, the movie

One of the biggest benefits of working at a communications company is the exposure to people who have been in the industry for years - like Doug Bowe. Doug taught me how to do voice over work and periodically will throw me a bone and let me do a commercial. The above clip is a promotion I did for Blockbuster Video for the upcoming Blue Ray release of the epic movie, Cats and Dogs. Although I did like the movie, I had to work pretty hard to feign this much excitement! All in a hard day's work.

Throughout the program, these three women will serve as one-on-one mentors to help participants’ access capital, license technology, assemble an advisory board, and much more.

Homeless in El Paso: Mark

As told to me by Mark, parking lot on Mesa and University, Jan. 27, 2011:

Mark arrived in El Paso from Albuquerque recently, and he's one of the most visible homeless men in the city given his outfit. Mark wears a Santa Claus costume and Scooby Doo hat so that he can spread good cheer to all those who see him walking the streets. The outfit landed him on the front page of the Albuquerque Journal in December 2009. (I have yet to fact check that.)

These days Mark is busy raising $50 so he can buy an Easter Bunny costume and head back to Albuquerque by Easter Sunday in the hopes of landing back on the front page of the Journal. He is very excited to tell you his story and I promised him I would help him raise the $50 for his bunny suit.

Recipe: Southwestern Quiche

This quiche began its life in the Loretto Flavors...then and now...Cookbook, published in 1978. The recipe, found on page 36, Southwestern Quiche was submitted by Barbara Summers Dobbs of Decateur, Georgia. I added an additional egg and about 1/3 cup more milk along with chopped grilled chicken to accomodate the larger casserole used. I substituted Comté and Dublin cheeses (Cosco) and Swiss for the Jack and Cheddar. The green chiles were fresh frozen, which Mary purchased at Ardovino's farmers market. Mike thinks the green chiles may be a hybrid of long green and jalapenos, which explains their heat. In any case, they are super hot and good.

Crust for 9" pie- add 1 teaspoon chile powder
3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese (subs. Comté, Dublin, and Swiss)
1/2 cup grated Monterrey Jack cheese
2 tablespoons finely chopped onions (subs. 1 large chopped scallion)
3 large eggs, lightly beaten (added 1 medium)
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon white pepper (eliminated)
1 1/2 cups half and half (increased to 2 cups)
1 (4 oz.) can chopped green chile
(I used the chopped roasted fresh frozen chiles, about 9-12, to make about 3/4 - 1 cup.)
1 small can sliced ripe olives (eliminated)
3/4 cup chopped grilled or boiled chicken breast (added)

Mix cheeses together. Spread on bottom of pie shell. Mix other ingredients and pour over cheeses. Bake 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees until knife comes out clean (or is set).

Note: I pre-baked the pie shell at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Later, I baked the quiche for 50-60 minutes and held in a warm oven (150 degrees or so) for one hour until dinner.

The Lisa D. Archives: Stop! Put on a condom before you impregnate that woman!

One way to help end the abortion debate is for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and use a condom or the pill when having recreational sex so that abortion doesn’t have to be used as a form of birth control.

We can all agree that culture wars surrounding the abortion debate will never cool. Much like the legalization debate, any conversations about abortion go from zero to 60 in seconds, and the knives are out.

This week in the news, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst spoke in favor of SB 182 sponsored by Houston state Sen. Dan Patrick, which would require any woman seeking an abortion, to first have the opportunity to hear the heartbeat and see an ultrasound image of the fetus. Gov. Perry will soon speak in favor of this bill on the steps of the capitol in Austin.

When confronted with news items like this, I always fantasize about the news story I wish I was reading: "Gov. Lisa Degliantoni spoke out in favor SB 449, sponsored by Houston Senator Dan Patrick, which would require any man seeking recreational sex to first have the opportunity to put on a condom and not impregnate the women he is about to have intercourse with.” But headlines like that just don't get written, nor do laws like that get written let alone passed.

And why don’t laws like SB 449 get written? Maybe because the boys are in charge or they don’t like wearing condoms or women aren’t forcing them to use condoms before intercourse. Eight years ago, the Alan Guttmacher Institute surveyed over 10,000 American women who had abortions. Nearly half said they hadn’t used birth control in the month they conceived. Ten percent said their partners had objected to it. Three percent said they had thought it would make sex less fun. (Op-Ed Contributor: This Is the Way the Culture Wars End By WILLIAM SALETAN, February 21, 2009, The New York Times.)

Granted I have nothing against recreational sex, nor do I think mandatory sonograms for women scheduled for an abortion are a bad idea as long as the government is going to pay for them, but I am opposed to the government meddling in the bedrooms of consenting adults because those adults are too lazy to use birth control. Our government shouldn’t waste time slapping the hands of lazy individuals using abortion as a method of birth control and this goes for the obese, the willingly unemployed and people who have taken on mortgages they can’t afford.

Our new president has been talking endlessly about personal responsibility and in his recent address to Congress, President Barack Obama said “What is required now is for this country to pull together, confront boldly the challenges we face, and take responsibility for our future once more.”

In the spirit of where this country needs to go, let’s take responsibility and move into houses we can afford, get rid of personal debt, exercise and maintain a healthy body weight and for gosh sakes, put on a condom before having recreational sex so leaders like Dewhurst and Perry can spend time on issues that matter like solar farms, education and health care.

Food Review: The Cuban Pressed Sandwich at Maracas International Food

Tucked into a small gas station in Canutillo, Ramon Ortiz works in a tiny kitchen serving up delectable Puerto Rican dishes. Ortiz claims his Philly is the best thing on the menu, I’m going to have a hard time ordering anything other than the Cuban pressed sandwich.

In a town where you can’t spit without hitting yet another “amazing” Mexican joint, restaurants serving International Foods are rare and good ones worth a repeat visit even rarer still. Blame it on a population that believes “the older the woman the better the beans” where traditional Mexican food can dominate the cuisine for decades in a home, the lack of diversity in food is a real issue/crisis in El Paso for diners craving dishes other than Machaca, Huevos Rancheros, Caldo, etc. That is why I recently spent an afternoon driving around Canutillo, past dirt cemeteries with wooden crosses, stray dogs and rows of trailer homes, in search of the genesis of a Facebook post that boasted that a “pressed Cuban sandwich made in a gas station down the street from the Outlet Malls was worth the drive.” (I frequently rely on Facebook for recipes, food recommendations and the chance to flaunt my dining experiences.)

Still lost in Canutillo, I turned the car around at the outlet mall and noticed a small sign in the dirt along the curb that read “pressed sandwiches” with an arrow pointing toward a gas station. Following the arrow, I quickly pulled into the parking lot of a gas station, where a plastic sign hung on one of the exterior walls with “Maracas International Foods” printed on it. I went inside and past the cashier was a former Subway Sandwich stand with Ramon Ortiz standing behind it. Friendly and very patient with my 13,000 questions, he broke down the menu, explaining I had to buy my drinks from the cashier (to include beer) and he would serve me at the section of tables when my sandwich was done. I ordered the 6” Cuban sandwich ($5.50) served with Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, pulled pork and ham and garlic hash browns on the side.

I waited about five minutes for the sandwich and about halfway through Ortiz sat down at my table and wanted to know who I was, asking him so many questions. We introduced ourselves and found our similar East Coast personalities refreshing, striking up a quick conversation surrounding my love for his Cuban sandwich and his customers desire for more Mexican food on his menu. “I had to add burritos to the menu because so many people asked for it, despite what was on my menu. Finally I started giving away samples of the Cuban sandwich and customers were hooked. Now I can’t get them to order anything else,” says Ortiz.

Ortiz and his wife moved to El Paso from Florida six years ago and being a self proclaimed workaholic, Ortiz now works seven days a week running the kitchen at Maracas and catering to several businesses during lunch. He’s busy but loves the work and if the pressed sandwich is a window into the pure bliss that lies in the flavors of the other items on the menu, I have a lot of time to spend at his table.

The Cuban pressed sandwich includes all the typical ingredients but adds several extra ounces of delicious pulled pork, something Ortiz is not stingy with at all. The bread is coated with just the right amount of garlic butter and puts a crisp texture on the edges. The juxtaposition of textures, warm crunchy bread with melted butter on meat in the middle with a salty burst of pickle, makes every bite divine.

Serving garlic hash browns as a lunch side might seem odd but it’s a perfect compliment to the salty and garlicky sandwich. After the meal, you’ll open a small plastic container of Boston baked bean candies that cut through the garlic, an unexpectedly refreshing treat. Or if you choose not to eat the candies you can just shake the beans in their container that makes the same sound as Maracas. Get it?

The Friday menu consists of Puerto Rican food only, serving up rice and beans and other delectable dishes that run you less than $10. If you’re like me, it will take several visits to venture away from the Cuban but Ortiz swears that “the ladies like the Sandwich de Bistec” - we’ll see if he can convince me to try it by summer.

Experience the excitement as the El Paso Museum of History celebrates the grand opening of this once in a lifetime exhibit, The Threads of Memory: Spain and the United States (El Hilo de la Memoria: España y los Estados Unidos) at this free Family event. Activities will include period sword fighting demonstrations by the Society for Creative Anachronism, calligraphy or writing with a quill pen, doing straw art, making an old globe miniature to take home plus more. Children and adults can try on reproduction period clothing and armor such as the early settlers would have worn plus handle reproduction 17th century weapons such as muskets and swords. There will be re-enactors wearing costumes of the period and a possible special appearance by early explorer Cortes.

At 3:00 PM there will be a special bilingual performance by Teatro Paraguas of “The Peralta Proclamation.” This is not a play but a dramatic costumed reading of one of the documents that will be on display in the exhibit where Pedro de Peralta receives his orders to take over Juan de Oñate’s failed efforts to colonize New Mexico. This company performed for the Prince and Princess of Spain during the 300th Anniversary celebration of the founding of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

On this day only, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a special tour of the exhibit by Falia González, Chief of the Conservation Department of the Archivo General de Indias and visiting curator.

All activities will be free and open to all.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Fundación Rafael del Pino and is co-organized by the Archivo General de Indias (General Archive of the Indies) and the State Corporation for the Spanish Cultural Action Abroad (Sociedad Estatal para la Acción Cultural Exterior, or SEACEX), in collaboration with Spain’s Ministries for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and Culture.

Workshop: 10 Minute Play Workshop Time Change

The First workshop will be January 29th and they will run on the last Saturday of every month until July, when we will have a public reading of the works. All pieces may potentially be performed as part of our annual short play showcase in August.

El Paso and Barnes and Noble must know we no longer will stand for bigotry and hate. We must stand up, be heard, and let everyone know that EQUALITY is afforded to all.

It must be known, to all parties including Barnes and Noble, that free speech (including writing) is a fundamental element of our constitution however Tom Brown spews hatred towards gay and lesbians. Equally important as our 1st Amendment to free speech, El Paso For Equality stands for our 14th Amendment that ensures the Equal Protection Clause. This form of Equality must be extended to all people, including the LGBT community. Yesterday's injunction order, from an El Paso Federal Judge, further propagates and ensures equality in El Paso is and must be afforded to all.

Furthermore, El Paso For Equality, working with other local LGBT organizations plans to express OUR 1st Amendment Right to peacefully assemble and protest Tom Brown's book signing tomorrow at the Barnes and Nobles Bookstore at 705 Sunland Park Drive. If Barnes and Noble intends to promote selling his book, by allowing a book signing, and allow for Tom Brown's bigotry / hatred towards El Paso's LGBT community something must be done! We also plan encourage all LGBT organizations nationwide to boycott this bookseller if they are promoting his book by allowing a book signing. Artists, DJ's and others are donating their time, the INBA art museum in Juarez is donating refreshments and a freshly painted wall that stretches around the museum and is highly visible in downtown Juarez, but the crews themselves have to provide the materials, and he's realized over the past week that many can't afford to do that.

We are trying to raise money for 150 cans of graffiti-quality spray paint, @ $5 a can that's $750 dollars. We are working with Making Graffity store in Juarez who are donating the special caps used by the artists in their work.

Greetings from the Gene Roddenberry Planetarium!

As you may know, we have recently started a docent program to help our student planetarium visitors get more out of their visit to our facility.

Unfortunately we have not been as successful as we had hoped in attracting volunteers to be docents. So, we are turning to our EPISD family in hope that maybe you know someone that might be interested in becoming a docent at the planetarium.

The workload is easy, the time commitment is small, and the satisfaction is great.
Docents guide students through the exhibits as well as help planetarium personnel with crowd control. Docents do not have to be "scientists." They just have to love helping our students learn and helping the community grow.

The Gene Roddenberry Planetarium host shows throughout the school year, and has shown more than 1 million students in the El Paso area the wonders of the universe in its 41 years of operation. Prospective docents do not have to have a background in astronomy or science in order to be part of the program.

Planetarium docents will help students understand the exhibits of the planetarium as well as help with questions regarding planetarium programs. Docents will assist in the planetarium during the days that classes are visiting. Typically, there are three shows a day during the school year. Docents may volunteer for all day sessions, or partial days. The schedule is very flexible. Volunteers will be part of the EPISD Volunteer in Public Schools program, and will have to go through proper screening prior to becoming part of the program.

This is a tremendous opportunity for organizations that have to meet community service hours or even retirees with a little time to spare. We are hoping that you can help spread the word, and that you may know of a person or group that could help with our program.

As it becomes more common for teenagers to realize - and then tell others - that they are gay or lesbian, there is also a growing number of teen characters on TV programs geared toward teens going through the same thing. The CW's "90210," which returns on Jan. 24, joins the ranks of shows like "Glee," "Gossip Girl," "Pretty Little Liars," "Hellcats," "Greek" and the new MTV series "Skins" in showcasing young, gay roles.

The takeaway in these shows is typically consistent: that you will be accepted for who you are. Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, pointed to the example of Kurt coming out to his dad in "Glee." "We see in 'Glee' in the father's response a very important role modeling on how to show your love for the child who just came out.

Book News: Manhattan Heights Book to be published by local author

Craig Peters, has received a letter of acceptance from Arcadia Publishing, the nation’s leading publisher of local and regional history. He is currently working on a book about Manhattan Heights and is looking for vintage photographs and stories of that area (photos must be black and white from 1900-1950). He is gathering anything about the park, streets, houses, schools, churches, Rose Garden, trolleys, trains, family gatherings, weddings, house blue prints, smelter, people, and early founders. His deadline is February.

Visit the El Paso Museum of History on Thursday, December 30th, from 1 to 4:00 PM and enjoy El Paso and the Real Old West.

Come join Six Guns and Shady Ladies who will shoot it out with the Paso Del Norte Pistoleros to see who will rule the Sun City. Tribal dances by the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo and Mariachi by students from El Paso Community College under the direction of Anji Morgan-Thornton will be on hand to entertain you. There will be a “fashion show” as ladies mingle with the crowd to show off their finery. A special exhibit of antique firearms will be on view for this day only. Hands-on activities will include trying on old west clothes, riding a saddle, grinding coffee, making rope, grinding corn, using a chuck box, and branding your own piece of wood to take home. This year a special appearance will be made by Jaime “Jimmy” Portillo who is the writer/creator of the new local comic book series Hell Paso: The story of Dallas Stoudenmire which is based on the history of an El Paso marshal who served from 1881 to 1882. Portillo’s series was made possible with a generous grant from the Wild West History Association. He will be on hand to discuss how he created his series and to sign copies of his book which will be available in the museum gift shop A Step Back in Time.

10-Minute Play Workshops (Free to the Public)

Under the tutelage of Austin Savage these workshops are available monthly on the last Saturday of every month.

The workshops are scheduled from 11 AM to 1 PM and are open to any interested participants.

The resulting works will be eligible for performance in The Border Theatre’s annual short play festival, the 2011 Exhibitions in Dis/Connection following a reading of the works in late July.

The Border Theatre:

New Work Collective ($20 a month)

The goal of this new project is to create production opportunities and a network of ongoing support for local playwrights/screenwriters interested in developing one act, short film or full-length scripts.

We are looking for local playwrights/screenwriters to commit to feedback sessions in which their work will be read by Border Theatre Ensemble Members and receive response from the performance group.

Those interested in directing are also welcome to partake in the collective. The directing participants will be assigned one of the scripts and will be guided through the fundamentals of dramaturgy that are the basis for any director.

After the 5-month period, we will have a public staged reading of each piece, with audience feedback.

The dates of the workshops are: January 15, February 12, March 12, April 9, May 14

The sessions run from 2-5 PM.

The cost is $100 for five sessions including the reading.

Contemporary Movement Classes with APT Movement ($40 a month)

The Border Theatre and The Glasbox are pleased to announce their partnership with an exciting new performance troupe. A few of The APT Movement Company members first demonstrated their skills in August during The Border Theatre’s 2010 Exhibitions in Dis/Connection. They reappeared as part of the Border

Performer Project and solidified themselves in the Glasbox firmament with their exciting all day spectacle as part of The Everything Thing.

They are now offering their unique vision of dance to the El Paso public through classes and workshops.

Their first offering is a weekly class in Contemporary Movement. The participants can range from young adult to adult and no dance background is required.

The classes are Sunday evenings from 6-7:30 PM and cost $40 a month.

Acting Performance Classes ($100 a month)

The Border Theatre is also offering weekly performance classes to the public with the intent of allowing each student to develop working system that allows them to work beyond the peer/mentor relationship. The courses will involve scene study as well as expansion into basic dramaturgy and basic film technique, so that participating pupils are prepared to work immediately in El Paso’s burgeoning film industry.

The source material for the classes will be the many original scripts that have been submitted to The Border Theatre by award winning writers from across the nation. Students will have the opportunity to work alongside as well as with Border Theatre Ensemble Members in an attempt to accelerate their growth

The sessions are scheduled from 5:30-8:30 every Saturday and will cost only $100 a month. The classes are open to people of all ages and experience levels.

"The Trip" --

When 19-year-old gay-rights activist Tommy and 24-year-old Alan first meet in 1973, they find themselves on the opposite sides of the political coin. Despite their many differences, they form a loving long-term relationship. In 1977, during Anita Bryant's crusade, an anti-gay book Alan wrote years before gets published without his consent. The book destroys Tommy's credibility as a well-known activist, resulting in Tommy and Alan's break-up. Seven years later, Alan is given a second chance, a reunion with Tommy and the opportunity to set things right.

Three Kings Day Celebration – A Day in Puerto Rico

Sample Puerto Rican Cuisine, Music, Dance and Art on January 6th and 8th at the El Paso Public Library

The El Paso Public Library in cooperation with Architectural Solutions, Tommy Santos, Luna’s and Sons Grocery, Organización Cívico-Cultural de Puertorriqueños en El Paso, Puerto Rican Medical Society at El Paso, and others is hosting a Puerto Rican themed 3 Kings Day Celebration featuring the food, music, dance and art of Puerto Rico. The celebration will take place on January 6 and 8 with events scheduled throughout both days. The event is free and open to the public. Three Kings Day, also known as The Epiphany or El Día de los Reyes Magos in Spanish, is celebrated on January 6th and is a Christian holiday believed to be the day that Jesus Christ is revealed to be the son of God in man. The biblical story says that after Jesus was born, it took the Three Kings, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar 12 days to travel to Bethlehem, the place of his birth. There, the Kings gave Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In Puerto Rico, Three Kings Day is one of the most important holidays of the year and is marked by celebrations featuring traditions such as parrandas which are groups of singers that make the rounds surprising friends with a serenade of aguinaldos or songs. On the eve of January 6, children that have been good are traditionally given gifts said to be from the Three Kings, reminiscent of the biblical story. Children are taught to gather hay, straw or grass and place it underneath their beds for the Three King’s horses as they journey from town to town. The holiday also boasts its own traditional fare some of which will be available to sample during the celebration to be held at the Library.

El Paso Museum of History Presents Special Lunch Time Tai Chi Classes

Every Wednesday, beginning January 12th to March 23rd, 2011

Noon to 1:00 PM

Beginning on Wednesday, January 12th and continuing until March 23rd, 2011, the El Paso Museum of History will offer special lunch time classes in Tai Chi taught by Hsio-Ying Hines from Noon to 1:00 PM. Lose midweek work stress by relaxing with Tai Chi. It will make Friday come sooner!

Of the five major Tai Chi movements taught, the Yang style is the most popular because of its slow, graceful movements. Students will learn basic simplified Yang movements and twelve therapeutic Qi-Gong exercises. If you haven’t been to the museum to take Tai Chi, here is your chance to start. The movements are slow and easy and you can learn very quickly. Western scientists have established that Tai Chi and Qi-Gong can reduce hypertension, help diabetes and stress management, and ease arthritis.

Hsio-Ying Hines has been teaching Tai-chi at the Chinese Language School, and EPCC Northwest Campus Library Summer program since 2007. According to her students, she is very patient and makes you feel comfortable from the first lesson on. Ms. Hines will add interesting anecdotes of Chinese history as she teaches you the various movements.

Loose, comfortable clothing and athletic shoes are highly recommended for the class. Class size is limited to 20, so register early.

Program fee: $20.00 for non-members/$10.00 for members for the ten week course.

The El Paso Employees Federal Credit Union is selling a specially designed Holiday Souvenir Ornament commemorating the recent Celebration of Lights Program in downtown El Paso at San Jacinto Plaza.

The ornaments are $10 and are available at any of their eight (8) branches in the city or at the Candlelighters Administrative Office at 1400 Hardaway St. (Suite 206).
All of the proceeds raised will be donated to Candlelighters of El Paso that was started in 1978 by a group of parents whose children had all been diagnosed with cancer.

Today the organization is dedicated to enriching the lives of children who have cancer by providing hpe, support, encouragement, advocacy and education to those children, their families, and the community at large.

Register: Sun City Kickball League Sign Ups!

SUN CITY KICKBALL’S REMIX SEASON:
TWO MORE DAYS TO REGISTER FOR ONE FUN TIME!

It’s been over a year and a half since we began our first game and every season since then has grown bigger and better! Each season we ask teams of eight to fifteen players to sign up to play but this one’s a little different. Our Remix Season requires players to sign up on an individual basis and this coming Saturday, all participating players’ names will be combined and drawn one by one to determine on which team each will play. We know. Crazy. Just the way we like it! Here are some of the details:

REGISTRATION:

Coconuts Bar & Grill (816 N. Piedras)

Wednesday, December 15, 2010 – 6pm to 8pm

Saturday, December 18, 200 – 1pm to 3pm

$15 per player, Cash or Check Only

Games will be on Saturday afternoons at 1pm, 2pm and 3p. The season will begin January 8, 2011 and include five regular season games plus one championship series on the sixth Saturday.

While fees collected for each season assist Sun City Kickball with a variety of league-related costs, some of the remaining funds and monies from continuing sponsor Coconut’s Bar & Grill allow the league to make various charitable contributions throughout the year. For example, Sun City Kickball recently donated $500 to the West Texas Food Bank. As per West Texas Food Bank officials, the donated funds will provide 3,500 meals for area residents in need.
