Do: 2010 Hate Crimes Vigil

This candelight vigil will be held tomorrow night at the Gazebo in Madeline Park (at the corner of Kern and Cincinnati). This event is presented and sponsored in part by: The District Attorney's Office, The El Paso Sheriff's Office, KHRO 1150AM, The City of El Paso (particularly: Susie Byrd and Ann Morgan Lilly), The El Paso Police Department, Rio Grande Adelante, PFLAG El Paso, The NAACP, and The Center Against Family Violence.

The program will begin at 7 pm with a FREE showing of "The Laramie Project" at the Fellini Film Cafe. "The Laramie Project" is a documentary based on the play that highlights the life, death and aftermath of Matthew Shepard. The Vigil will be immediately following, from 8:45pm and will focus on those who have died from Hate Crimes. This annual event is held in October in memory of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., two men who's lives where cut short because of bigotry. The Vigil will be hosted by Chief Deputy Sheriff Sylvia Aguilar. Other speakers include Commissioner Veronica Escobar, City Rep. Lily and Byrd, representatives from the District Attorney's Office, and representatives from local law enforcement agencies and the Center Against Family Violence. The candlelight vigil will be until 10pm and a video will highlight the somber importance of recognizing "Hate Crimes" and the 1st anniversary of the Federal "Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act".
